The WEED was interviewed on the 5rph footy show thursday night.
The subject matter was Central Districts
WEED said this is the best Centrals side he has ever seen [or similar]
WEED followed up with Centrals going through UNDEFEATED this year.!!!!!!!!
Too much information for a coach
What message does this send to his players before Round 15 this year ?

Could be mind games Mal?
Could be that he was giving his honest thoughts? something that is lacking in todays footy as they always do the diplomatic approach.
Yeah/Nah ,,,,,,, yeah nah.......you know the interview

I don't see this as a problem for a coach. I think he has to be honest with his players. They now know the level that they have to reach. It could acually be a motivating factor - play well against the best and it shows improvement. As far as the current teams standings -it's still a bit early but 8 from 8 is the best we can do. It depends if they can avoid teh mid-season slump which has affected many quality teams of the past and can play at their best in the big games and dare I say finals.

Do we think the players couldn't work out for themselves that Centrals are the team to beat this year?

Smithy - I love the avatar.
"May I see your license sir?"
"Isn't it back there on the bumper, man?"

I agree with smithy
when the crows were red-hot last year, several AFL coaches came out and said the Crows were GF certainties, looked what happen
i don't think players take too much notice of what the coach say's in the media, he is just feeding the footy public

So mumbles should turn the tables this year and come out and say the other 15 teams are certainties to make the GF. Then the Crows will go top

ROUND 15 RESULT
CD 23-13
WA 6-6
89 point loss
Not bad I suppose, the way WEED raved on about CD he might have
expected a 159+ point loss
At least WA did 70 points better than the Legs at the Ponderosa
Can we expect WEED in TOMorrows press to say how proud he was
his players did better than Norwood .........

WEED will still be proud of his lads
They did 49 points better than Norwood
Point is Jimmy you dont pump up the tyres of your opposition
this is one of the bleakest days in WA history.
The tide will turn ,but the coach needs to address his club internally
and stop making sweeping statements to the press about the opposition.
They played some good footy earlier this year, thats something to build on
There are players with considerable talent at the club.
WA will again be a competitive team, but the WEED needs to focus
on his club and not the press.

Mal...
Whilst your post has some merit, the whole of the footy community would've laughed at weed if he came out and said westies would beat centrals.
Publically he was just being honest,, privately he would;ve been pumping the troops for a decent effort and hopefully a win...

Maybe some middle ground would have been better?
As the coach of the team, and the man everyone at the club, in theory should look toward for inspiration and leadership, it isn't such good form to publically state how much better the opposition is than you are, unless you are a Malcolm Blight type character and you are trying some crazy reverse psychology stuff to motivate your side more, but I don't think the Weed was doing that. It reminds a little of that defense lawyer in the Simpsons, and when the prosecuting lawyer has finished his opening address, the lawyer turns to his client, the defendant, Marge, and says "Ooooh, he's goooooood!!" comical, but doesn't exactly fill you with confidence. I reckon the Weed was maybe just a little too praiseful of the opposition. Words have power, and when you get hammered, you either say something positive and make it happen or something neutral because you know there is no way to match them. What you don't do is freely admit that there is no way to match them, and in your opinion, you don't think anyone else will either...for the entire season. "Ooooh, they're goooooood!".

Quite interesting article in Sportsbeat this week by Chris Kendall, discussing exactly what is going wrong at Westies. It hit the nail on the head with quite a few points - easy to blame a coach, but what about the players? Also talks about stop blaming the Doug Thomas issue for everything - worth a read as its one of the only written mediums to get extensive SANFL discussion.

I would love to read the article but living in Victoria don't get sportsbeat but PhilH sent me over a few copies. thanks for the Phil. Westies problems stem from Shaun Rehn and Doug Thomas. Rehn didn't recruit much and used juniors more than recruiting which is a good idea but you need recruits. Doug hired the weed as seniors coach saying he was the best man for the job. I felt that it was rushed and we should have looked elsewhere as well as the weed and gone Australia wide on a search for a coach. But what is done is done and now we have three spoons in a row, players not committed to playing and it is a long way from here but we should start looking at next year now and start climbing off the arse end of the ladder.

Blaming the coach is the simplest, easiest way out for most supporters - look at this site over the course of the season. We tend to side with the players 95% of the time, don't know why?
Even where genuine questions are raised about players and their level of commitment it still gets turned around on the coach .. ie, the players aren't commited because the coach hasn't inspired them. True in some cases but not true in all.

I'll always remember Blighty's line at his 1st press conference as Crows coach ... something like 'it's time for the players to take responsibility for what has happened on the field the last 2 seasons'.
Next, some heads were chopped and the rest is history .....
