Sunday WHY?

Postby G » Fri Jun 15, 2007 10:39 pm

I apologise if this was brought up earlier in the week but why are there 3 games on sunday. I realise there has to be 1 on the Saturday for the ABC and South are trying to promote Sundays at Noarlunga but why the other 2 games.
Both SA sides in the AFL are not playing Sat. arvo and yet the Power are playing Sunday arvo and virtually start 1/2 way thru the SANFL last quarter.

South wanting all home games on Sunday.

North & Glenelg wanting an extra days break after playing on Monday.

The nerve of the AFL to put a PP game on against 3 SANFL games
You would think the AFL would put it on the Saturday where they
only compete with one sanfl game.

also i think that the magpies are about the only club that play their home games in direct competition to the Crows homegames 8) , maybe its a bit about the other sanfl teams getting their own back. Sturts home game being played on Saturday may have something to do with playing again next Friday night.
But it was more than a victory for Greece. It was a stirring example to free people throughout the world of what a few brave men can accomplish once they refuse to submit to tyranny.

I think G is asking more in general rather than just this week.

I like Sunday football as an idea but I think they have done it a bit too often and Id tend to only have the one match on the day. They need to keep it as somthing different. Novelty factor is important in these things. Its all about timing. I think Sunday has greater potential than Saturday for big blockbusters. I think in 04 North Sturt at Unley would have been a smaller crowd on the saturday. I think the 1st meeting between North and Glenelg on the Sunday last year would have been a smaller crowd on the saturday.

Ages ago I started a topic "make the programme malleable". I stand by it. 1989 Fathers day is the perfect example.

North had to have a 6 day break. Our supporters would have winged about too short a break on one hand or a sunday game on the other. An unwinnable this one.
Never give a sucker an even break

Nor ban a user for an acceptable topic of discussion.

"Baby on board". Why dont you put a sign on ur car saying "adult on board" or "car stereo in use"?

Personal opinion here.

Different timeslots work for different clubs depending on individual circumstances.

Friday Nights have long worked for Norwood
Centrals crowds have shot through the roof since they started Saturday Night games
and was thus able to draw on Gawler & Barossa sports.

Glenelg have made Queens Birthday Monday and annual event that gets 4K plus.

For South, Sunday is definetly the best day to play to get a crowd
based on figures over the past few years.

Also symbolically it sends a good message to SFL & GSFL clubs in our zones that
we want to work togther with them not go head to head in competition.

As for others ... that is up for them to work out and drive accordingly.

Phil was it ever a consideration for SA to play an away game this round
and be the second game on the saturday
I know SA have had a tough draw of away games too date but surely
there should have been a 2nd game this weekend

I have to agree with G on this topic
Better organisation doing the sanfl draw

There is one game of footy today ST V PA
NO AFL day game on this saturday arvo
This weekend is poorly programmed

People like BAYMAN and I go to as many SANFL games that we can fit in
Most weeks we get to see 2-3-4 SANFL games over the 3 days
This week ST V PA and then we will see PP V ES
And thats it only 1 game of SANFL footy possible for us[ps I will watch it on TV]
That means for the 1st time in 2007 I will not see a live SANFL game.

Its a said state of affairs when the SANFL schedules programming to accomodate the minnows of the competition, no wonder crowds are down this year.
