Racist slur in 17's game.

Postby MightyEagles » Tue Jun 26, 2007 10:35 am

During the Eagles v Central U17s a Centrals player said something to an Eagles player who was an Aboriginal. The player should say sorry and maybe stand aside for a couple of games. I know the Eagles player and will not name him.

The above is a personal comment.

Sad that this sort of thing still happens.

I hope the player involved realises the bad thing he's done when he faces his own team-mates of indigenous descent. I would imagine he'll find it hard to look them in the eye.

Well done to the two clubs for mediating this situation.

Sounds like it was professionally handled, well done to the clubs on that point. Really disappointing, particularly given that there are a few Aboriginal lads in the underage squads at Centrals.

I was coaching one of these lads a few years ago who was racially vilified in an inter-association game in Victoria - it is heartbreaking to see the kids face after the game, trying to come to terms with what has been said to him. Thankfully it is now an uncommon occurrence in our game.

Not that uncommon ... yesterday's Herald-Sun website ran a story on junior footballers racially sledging Jews and Africans at Under 12 and Under 14 level. What champions! Fools more like it!

Unfortunately I expect we'll hear more of it as we move further away from the politically correct 90s.

I actually think a lot of these young lads wouldn't know any better, or understand the potential damage that can be inflicted by their behaviour and imho it represents an excellent opportunity to educate them prior to adulthood ... Any repeat offence and they should be dealt with harshly.

And it appears that only certain posters can be stupid twats.

I hear ya Punky. I just love it when I get called a 'cracker' by the opposing fans of one particular side. I'm far from a 'cracker' and get annoyed at the suggestion.

Your experience?

Topsy, he has a valid point. He hasn't shown any ignorance in his post IMHO.

Ever been called a cheating white cnut by a full blooded Walpiri mob aboriginal when umpiring footy in Alice Springs Topsy, I have.....

I flippantly approached senior league offcials to say I had been racially vilified I was told to drop it.....

To say it doesn't happen is head in the sand stuff, it happens whenever a particular racial group is in the minority (in this case a white anglo saxon male on a field full of indigenous Australians).....
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

I'm sure Darren Lehmann has a thought or two on this point.
It's 100% correct, unfortunately.

I was once called a 'white c***' in a game by an aboriginal opposition player for no reason other to niggle and get under my skin.(as I was playing like a champion that day)
I was shocked a bit as I have the utmost respect for aboriginal people and even more respect for them as footballers.
Also as we had about 5 aboriginal players on my team.
I told him at the time that he was being racist towards me and he just laughed it off. So did I.
We had a chat after the game and everything was cool.

Chuck on a black skin and walk around in it for awhile. You'll die younger, more of your kids will die younger, you'll be less educated, less wealthy and more likely to end up in gaol. But hey at least you'll be able to say 'white cnut' and get away with it.

Nah, I'll stay a whitey thanks.
