Jake Bowen KO'd & in hospital

Postby Wedgie » Thu Jun 28, 2007 5:11 pm

I was shocked to see the City Messenger today had a front page article about Jake Bowen the Sturt ruckman suffering a fractured skull and lost a litre of blood at 12.15am on Sunday in Waymouth Street.
Apparantley he was trying to break up a fight or argument at the taxi rank outside the Marble Bar when he was struck and hit his head on the footpath.
He was taken to Royal Adelaide Hospital and was in a serious but stable condition on Tuesday.
"Jake was just trying to break it up and someone came from nowhere and (hit) him" said one witness.
Sturt players had been out celebrating following the annual Sturt Ball at Aami Stadium.
No arrest have been made as of Tuesday.
Sturt CEO Stuart Totham said Bowen looked like making a full recovery.
"Jake was in the wrong place at the wrong time" he said.
"Everyone at the club is just thankful that he is going to be OK".
Bowen has played 48 league games for Sturt since he was recruited from Red Cliffs Football Club, near Mildura, in 2003.

Have I missed this in the paper or on here during the weeks?
I bet if it had been the other way around and an SANFL footballer king hit another guy into hospital it'd be front page news.

Good luck to Jake on his recovery, I hope it all goes well.

no it has not been in the paper as of yet but there has been some discussion on db.org in relation to this incident. A few members of the squad witnessed this vicious attack and reports of an arrest surfaced yesterday

Scary shit when blokes smack their heads on the pavement. Everyone remembers what happened to Robbie West.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

and David Hookes.

It always worries me when scuffles break out at the footy on cement terracing that even a potentially small punch of a drunk bloke can still end up in a manslaughter charge if they hit their head wrong when landing.

Geez, crazy stuff. Hopefully the bloke makes a full recovery quickly. What an infamous night at the SFC with the under 18 lads getting in trouble as well. They'll want to win this weekend.

Good luck on your recovery big fella.
But it was more than a victory for Greece. It was a stirring example to free people throughout the world of what a few brave men can accomplish once they refuse to submit to tyranny.

I heard around the security business circuit in Melbourne that it was only a matter of time before David Hookes got hit - he was apparently very provocative when drunk, which was often. Nobody expected the result would be his death though.

Local paper mentioned young ruckman (Crabb?) who has probably lost the sight in one eye - hit in face with a beer glass - these incidents are so sad -- best wishes to both young men,

Descended from the Glenelg Magarey Medallist of that name. Shame to see such good footballing stock lost to the game in this fashion :(

IIRC: Was in Victor Harbor (footy trip?) and was king hit by a bloke named Darren Ellis.

Jake was with a group of friends getting a cab, another group tried to push in front and some words were exchanged. Then guy just hit him from behind. Apparently there hadn't even been any push and shove.
He's coming along fine and doctors are pleased with progress - + his parents have come down from mildura and are doing the nursing thing.
Supposedly the bloke that hit him has a history of this kind of nonsense.
Best of luck to Jake.

If the clown has a history, let's hope he's given a decent sentence. Nothing weaker than a hit from behind - be it on or off the field. Given Jake's size, there's no way the d!ckhead would have landed one face to face...

Very sad to hear of the incidents to both Jake and Crabby. Hoping that Jakes makes a full recovery and that Crabby does not lose his sight. Bit harsh to sledge David on this thread. Whenver I was out with him, although he did attract a bit of attention, he was never provocative or doing anything that should have resulted in him being hit, let alone killed. Please let the man rest in peace.
