I read it earlier (on line) very interesting. Doubt details will ever be made public but would love to be a fly on the wall at some of the meetings

I have problems with this for 2 reasons:

1) some players do play for less at clubs more attractive to them for various reasons, for eg Ian Callinan who the Dogs had given up on because of the money the Eagles offered him but Callinan rang Centrals back and took their lower offer.
2) what's to stop some of the more jealous clubs that can't recruit from lying? For eg North could tell the SANFL they offered Prendergast 60k when they in fact offered him 25k. (that's hypothetical, I have no idea)

im sure the league could only take documented evidence as fact surely?????

Nothing's been signed so there would be no official documentation, I could type up a letter with Sturt letterhead saying Im offering Jimmy from New York $100k a season and it still doesn't fix scenario 1 I suggested.
If the people involved with the salary cap don't know the sort of money being offered for players then they shouldn't be in the job as there's plenty of people that do.

THE SANFL has taken the extraordinary step of asking clubs to provide the facts and figures on offers they made to recruits who didn't eventually sign.

Players from at least four clubs have been called to West Lakes – with their contracts – for "interviews" with the Salary Cap Investigations Committee.

The "Stalinesque" method – which pits neighbour against neighbour – of intelligence-gathering has split the clubs.

The league says the information is to be used to catch those who insist on breaking the new salary cap regulations put in place in September.

Suspicion of wrong-doing would arise if a club reported offering (for example) $30,000 a year to a player who ended up playing at another club for $20,000 according to his contact.

But some SANFL general managers said they were "uncomfortable" about revealing what, they say, should remain confidential.

All general managers said the crooks must be caught but several also said they didn't like being party to what they considered to be essentially dobbing-in fellow clubs.

"We want clubs who break the salary cap to be caught but I don't really want to be part of it if it comes about because of something we did," said one general manager, who wished not to be identified.

Another said: "As a club we are supportive of the committee using all its powers to flush out anyone that's not compliant and not being a lame duck."

Wally Miller, the former Norwood general manager who heads the Salary Cap Investigations Committee, rang the clubs about two months ago asking for the details.

The committee does not respond to media enquiries but SANFL football operation manager Glen Rosser defended its actions.

"The Salary Cap Investigations Committee is certainly an active committee and one of its methods of operation is to enquire about recruits this year," he said. "Everybody hears rumour and innuendo about players' payments and the committee has gone to the clubs to collect some data."

It can't be a salary cap issue no mention of North Adelaide.....

I'd heard Callinan turned down bigger money to play for the dogs. Nice idea, but unfortunately speculation that "we offerd X, so the club he went to must be paying more" doesn't actually cut it. Need more proof I'm afraid. Just a media beat up by someone looking to fill space in their poor excuse for a paper.

Yes his name got mentioned as well today when speaking to an "official" as part of a similar complaint against Centrals re this matter.

Clutching at straws should be the title of the story if this is the best that some of these under performing (on and off field) clubs are doing in terms of complaining from what I have been "reliably" told.

Theres more to signing for a certain club than just the money offered to you. Im sure players would take less cash to play for a club that has a chance to win the flag over a club that doesn't.

Now BPRBP, having recovered from your understated and considered attack on Westies and their crowds, I find that the crowd yesterday was almost exactly the crowd at Prospect on the famous black plastic day. Enough said.

As to the cap, last year, Westies, with possibly one of the worst lists in its history, was $5,000 over the cap on its own admission and rightly fined.

This year, along with several other clubs, Westies chased players such as James Allan and Ian Callinan. For proof about Allan, ask Wedgie who will verify that. They know what they offered, as do the other clubs. Now it is possible that these types of players might play for a higher club for a bit less, but not for a lot less. It's also possible that the higher clubs can 'hide' payments through various means, legal or otherwise, but let's not pretend its not being done.

The league is now interviewing players and clubs about what was paid and offered. Far from being 'Stalinesque', it seems to be just the League doing its job in a proper manner. What have the dissenting clubs got to hide by not co-operating?

As much as it irks you, blacky is spot on. North, Centrals, Port and South have to be making payments well above the cap. I suspect the complaints are coming from clubs who can't afford to compete if other clubs are rorting the cap, which seems to be a reasonable approach.

What would your opinion be if (say) North were declaring to the league that only 2 or 3 players were being paid over $20K? I don't know if that is the case, but to abide by the rules, it would have to be not far off.

Look at the lists on this site recently of clubs AFL listed players. Take out the 'locals' and the obvious lower paid recruits from that list and you'll get a rough idea of the order of spending by Clubs.

The premice of the article just doesnt make sense. In fact its quite pathetic really.

I agree that if clubs are over the cap then it needs to be found out. If my club is over then so be it. We'll come across that if it happens.

If a club is offering a player $20k a year to play footy and $20k a year to work at their pub then there isnt any problem in that. Until the SANFL bans that then I doubt anyone will be significantly over the cap.

Not the 2-3-4 times over that certain people keep saying.

keep it up fellas loving it, why is it that as soon as salary cap rorting is mentioned everyone turns and looks north? and the reds go straight up in arms and straight onto the defensive, reminds me a bit of the poms on the last day of our test match last summer
