Another Predictable Story ... NT team back in the news

... it's been about two weeks now so we better run it again says the West Australian.

Under the heading of "A team like Alice ready to join expanded WAFL", Ross Lewis talks of the WAFL giving an in-principle agreement to a Northern Territory team playing out of Tragear Park, Alice Springs as early a next season.

The NTAFL is believed to have made a submission to the WA Football Commission in order "to enhance sporting and social opportunities for youth across northern Australia".

The NTAFL has made a similar offer to the SANFL, but is in favour of a move to the WAFL because of its younger playing base, traditional ties and lower salary cap.

The entry of a NT side is dependent upon the fact that there is no financial burden for "the WA code" and that it is cost neutral to WA football.

The costings for air fares over a season will be about $500,000.

All team members would have to be employed or studying and participate in school visits "to sprad the message of an active and healthy lifestyle" in a region beset by community problems.

A squad of 35 footballers would be assembled from predominately 17 to 23 year old talent.

The NTAFL believes the AFL and the Federal Government, with its new commitment to Aborigines, would provide financial support for the team's $1.3m budget in 2008.

If the story is true, then the odds of the Devils being linked to the SANFL would heighten no end. Better in the SANFL than the VFL.

Even the WAFL would admit that they'd like to eliminate the bye, but I would suspect that the clubs feel differently ... especially when the ideal scenario is an 18-round home and away season instead of the current 21 matches in 23 rounds.

STORM BREWS OVER NT AFL TEAM

A STORM is brewing over where the Northern Territory's Australian Rules football team will have its base - in the steamy capital or the desert town of Alice Springs.

Territory football groups met this week to discuss plans to set up the team to play in either the SAFL or the WAFL.

NT member for Port Darwin Kerry Sacilotto issued a statement after the meeting saying it would be a natural choice for any team to be based in Darwin.

But member for Stuart Karl Hampton today said he backed Alice Springs, claiming the town was at the heart of the territory.

"We have a proud tradition of producing great AFL players like Darryl White and current Kangaroo, Matthew Campbell," he said. "I was born in Alice and I have spent most of my life playing, coaching and watching footy in Alice and I can swear to you one thing - Darwin may be the Capital of the Territory, but Alice is the territory's AFL Capital."

Nearly half the town's population attended AFL matches, Hampton said. "Darwin can't match this," he said.

"After significant investment from the Martin government Traeger Park (in Alice Springs) is now an excellent venue for elite AFL training and games, let's use it."

Hampton said Darwin could still host at least a couple of games. In addition, he said a new training academy should be tied to the new team.

"The first Clontarf Academy in the Territory has been established in Alice Springs. The academy is going to be a breeding ground for great footballers and it makes sense to link it with the territory's footy team.

"Unlike Darwin, we actually play footy in Alice at the same time as down south. Players resting from the territory team can run around in the local league, strengthening the local competition.

"We are a growing community, with a good track record on delivering and supporting sporting events - this is an easy decision for the AFL."

Earlier this month, billionaire businessman and Carlton chairman Dick Pratt said he supported a proposal to see the NT team join the SAFL as soon as next year.

I'm with Mal ..... not necessarially on the amalgamation bit .... but on questioning the merits of an interestate team in the SANFL

I'm just not convinced about it and I'm not convinced how serious AFL-Tasmania really are about joining the proud SANFL
