Magpies Disbanding ?

I have read some stupid things in my life but that peanut in the Sunday Mail takes the cake.
He advocates for the sake of the Power disbanding the Port Adelaide Magpies !!!!!!!!......why ?...to what ends ?
I am the biggest Norwood supporter around and I hate Port but I would fight like hell to stop that !!!!!
What would the SANFL be without the pleasure....rare one at that for some clubs....of beating Port ?
Personally I despise Port Power mainly for what they did to the Magpies and a lot of true Port supporters do too. If Power played the Russians Id barrack for the Russians !!!!!!
Bugger off AFL leave this competitoin alone and let real football supporters watch real football....not that basketball they paly at AFL level !

I think it was the Sports Editor!

It smacked of trying to be controversial for the sake of it to me. Which is why I don't think it's had much discussion on here. Either that, or Port supporters couldn't give a stuff any more.

It's just someone trying to come up with a way of thinking about the welfare of the AFL (or a club, PAFC, in particular)

Was just a strange article to write. And completely wrong.

I cant see how removing the Port Magpies from the SANFL would help the Power get more fans. How anyone can come to that conclusion is beyond my intelligence. Just doesnt make sense.

Been roundly condemned on TPFP.

But the article is so ridiculous, I don't think anyone took it seriously.

Not even Mr. McGuire...

You can look at it in a couple of different ways. There are 2 teams claiming their heritage goes back over 100 years or so, one called the Port Adelaide magpies and the other Port Adelaide Power. Or are they united as one? I think we can argue the point till the cows come home
that the Power started in 1997 and the Port Magpies in the 1800's.
What that columnist was saying is they should combine and be as one and the Port magpies should be dissolved. I personally want the Port magpies in the SANFL and tell the Power to get stuffed and build their own heritage.

Ok now let me check my maths........Port Power have been in existence for 10 years and won 30 odd premierships so they claim, so that means they have won about 3 premiersips a year !
Port Adelaide Magpies contributed greatly to this state's football heritage whilst Port Power are just parasites.....they contribute nothing to the 9 SANFL clubs as opposed to the Crows who plow back megga bucks each year.
The Power can not even pull a decent crowd and how will destroying a large part of this states football heritage fix that ?????

Ignoring the nicknames, Port Adelaide wanted out from the SANFL and into the AFL. They got their wish partly - they joined the AFL. To keep the SANFL happy they kept the Magpies in the SANFL. For various logical reasons the Power and Magpies had to be kept separate.

If you have to make a choice to say who is the original Port Adelaide - you'd have to say the Power are. However, the Magpies resemble more of what the one Port Adelaide Football Club were before there were two Port Adelaide's.

Things have changed. Things do change. There is a Port Adelaide in the AFL and SANFL. Both share the history, but have a different future. Both are viable and meaningful. Just let them be.

Its their opinion and they dont seem to have any link to the Port Magpies in the SANFL.

Getting rid of the Magpies now wont win the Power more fans. People that are new to football arent going to be saying 'well, I probably wont choose Port Power because there is a Port Magpies in the SANFL'. Theres no relevance at all. Its just a stupid article.

I think it's funny that they managed to fill the stadium in the 1998 SANFL Grand Final.
