The race for 5th Position

Postby Ecky » Thu Jul 12, 2007 4:20 pm

I don't think there is much argument that Centrals, North, Sturt and the Eagles will make the five, so that leaves Norwood, Glenelg, Port and South fighting it out for 5th position. Currently these 4 teams are only separated by one point.

So which is most likely to make it?

This is the run home for each team:

Norwood: 8 games left, play South twice, Sturt never, all other teams once, 4 games at home
Glenelg: 8 games left, play Eagles twice, Centrals never, all other teams once, 4 games at home
Port: 7 games left, play every team once except Eagles never, 3 games at home
South: 8 games left, play Norwood twice, North never, all other teams once, 3 games at home

So it looks like Norwood probably have marginally the best draw, and the advantage of that half a game, although on current form Glenelg would probably be the favoured team. Thoughts?

I definitely favour Glenelg making the five. In fact I will go out on a limb now and predict a Central v Glenelg Grand Final.

I think you must be out on a day pass from your institution rather than out on a limb BP

That being said I can see the 'Bays scraping into fifth spot (and then going out to WWT in the elimination final).

MST, their recent form in beating North and Sturt and having the upper hand against Central for three quarters makes my statement not look all that stupid, does it not?

ATM based on the remaining fixtures and current form we would be favourites to make the five BUT that counts for two fifths of bugger all as favourites get beaten especially if they think the hard works has been done and coast in their remaining amtches.

I stand by my statement at the start of the year that I believe South are a better team than their current position illustrates.

What chance one of the four teams Ecky claimns to have made it will fall out?? Sturt??
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Final FIVE in the SANFL this year Tassie.

Norwood are currently 5th, and recently seemed to be working on the principle that you stay in the 5 if you lose.

HUGE game for both clubs on Sunday.
He's still my hero even if he is a little bit crap.

For Sturt to drop out, they would basically need to lose to everyone except West, and "hope" that 2 of these 4 teams win at least 5 of their 7/8 remaining games.

Or if Sturt beat West and someone else, they would need 2 of these teams to win at least 6 out of 7/8 games.

Possible but very unlikely.

I still think it is a race for 4th and 5th position with the Eagles added to this group. Eagles form is unknown given they have only beaten the out of form Port and West in the last month and a half.

Central are safe in top spot (to state the bleeding obvious), North should finish 2nd and Sturt could be caught by the Eagles.

I expect South to make a run for the 5, but Glenelg should hold on.

Likely...

Central
North
Sturt
Eagles
Glenelg

South
Norwood
Port
West

I'd laugh if Centrals didn't actually make the GF. They should on form and past recent history but as of today no-one has made it nor are they automatically guaranteed. Glenelg is not even in the 5 and after 14 rounds is the only team that hasn't sat in the 5 at some stage this year. Pushing Centrals for 3 quarters and catching North and Sturt on an off day hardly makes them GF candidates? A form side would have beaten Port at Alberton but the bays didn't despite Port handing them the game. Your statement does look silly if your basing their "credentials" on 3 recent games!

BP im not really sure we got sturt on an off day, considering we gave them a 20 minute head-start and then ran over them.

I concede North had an off-day.

Port should have put us away but bad kicking is bad footy.

we have played centrals twice now and have lost by around the 3 goal margin on both occassions.

Agree with most:

Central
North
Sturt
Eagles
Glenelg

Can't see Norwood making it with their run home and current form. South's the wildcard.

while the eagles probably will make it, they are no certainties either having said that i think glenelg will make it & i can see south running 6th

i'd like to see west win 3 or 4 games & give port the spoon 8) 8)

they could easily be on 12 points rather than the 9 they're on (the drawn game followed by the 2 point loss to the budgies) i dont think they are quite that bad yet, i think their problem is running out games as they seem to be very slow in the last quarters i've seen in recent matches they've played (sturt & glenelg)

It may come down to a couple of games played in the last round...

Eagles v Glenelg Woodville Oval
South v Norwood Noarlunga Oval

Unfortunately i think it may be South. Can't really rely on us making it atm.

I reckon south are gonna sneak in too.. their position on the ladder does not reflect the talent in their team imo.
