Where are the Glenelg fans ???

As briefly mentioned under the Peter Carey part of the hall of fame thread.

Glenelg USED to have to largest cheersquad and collection of "floggers" in the SANFL early to mid 80's.
From what I remember, the Bays used to have around 50-60 floggers waved each week which would only be rivalled by Norwood.

WHAT HAPPENED TO THEIR SUPPORTER BASE????????

I know ALL clubs lost supporters to the COWS but have the bays lost more than other clubs??

Could a sustained run of success bring back some more Bay s supporters??
Seems a pity not 20-25 years ago the biggest cheersquad of all can no longer produce 1 flogger to the footy.

I've seen plenty of floggers at Bays games

People grow out of those type of things Smithy, apart from a couple of clubs

so you judge supporter base on floggers?

Our home crowds have been well above SANFL average so other than fishing I have no idea what your on about

Dutchy, I was only using the "floggers"as an example of how big Glenelgs supporter base used to be.

People may grow out of waving floggers but that doesn't mean that clubs have to.
Your crowds still should be much better than what they are and I was merely asking why such a large drop off compared to other clubs.

Funnily enough, quite a few of the previous "floggers" and cheer squad from the Bays 20 years ago (not me) are still going to watch the Bays play every week and many of them are part of the "Snouts", including many of the people behind the Peter Carey record breaking banner.

Nwd - I don't think so! Nwd had the membership but never the "floggers" Try the PACS, SCS and NACS.

I think as it's been said before, we're last compared to the other clubs winning percentage for the past 15 years and not making the finals in the last 8 years doesn't help. Our support is growing as is the teams winning percentage(compared to three years ago, i think it has grown a lot)and i think if we make the finals this year a lot will jump on for it and one would think some would stay on the wagon for next year.

Bit sensitive there Dutchy, if anything it read to me as though Smithy was paying some sort of tribute to the size of the Bays Cheer Squad of old.
As a discussion though, I'd like to know exactly which era you are talking about Smithy. I know that Sturt had 350 in the cheer squad at the '83 Grand Final, which I believe is our largest number. I once heard (from Port supporters) that Port had official memberships nearing the one thousand mark around the early eighties too, but I never saw any evidence of that. So far as the massive Cheer Squads of the early eighties went it would be hard to split any of Glenelg, Port, Norwood or Sturt. They always looked to be about equal size to me. Later in the decade the Cheer Squads began getting smaller, like they went out of fashion or something, by about 1988 a Cheer Squad numbering about 100 would have been considered pretty big for a minor round game. In '83 Sturt's would have been about 150 for games against cellar dwellers, and 200+ for games against higher ranked clubs during the minor round.

When you title a thread "Where are the Glenelg fans" and in capitals put "WHAT HAPPENED TO THEIR SUPPORTER BASE????????" I think you could expect a challenge....Before you talk about Glenelg losing its supporter base you should look to at least 4 other clubs first before you get to the Bays, we have had some great home crowds over the last 2 seasons, I havent got the stats in front of me but would think we would be averaging around 3500, 500 more than the average SANFL crowd

Fair enough Dutchy. I had read it as a genuine question but the choice of capitals does make it look as though old Smithy could be stirring the pot a bit, so I can see how you'd feel otherwise.
Play on.

No doubt about it Rushby, just a bit disappointing there isn't more of you still going which was the point of my thread.

no stirring the pot... Dutchy is over sensitive that's all.

I'm not for moment suggesting no one has stayed faithfull to the bays over the last 20-25 years.
I was asking the question about the bays as they seem to have the biggest drop off out of all the other clubs.

Smithy have a look at the crowd today at Norwood...thought Norwood were one of the big drawers????...but I did see they had floggers so that must make it OK...

All SANFL clubs have suffered crowd wise since the birth of the cows! :(

One might just as reasonably ask, "where did all the Sturt fans come from?"

Because we all remember back in the mid nineties the only Blues who'd regularly turn out to games were the players wives or girlfriends, half a dozen from the blue-rinse set (replete with a shopping bag full of wool and two knitting needles), and Alex.
