West Coaching Article - Mark Ricciuto

Postby redandblack » Sun Jul 22, 2007 2:42 pm

Scott Walsh writing in today's paper about West's coaching vacancy:

"The Waikerie product has a strong link with West Adelaide, having been recruited from the club's country zone as a 17 year old."

Scott, perhaps a stronger link might have been that he played League for Westies

Seriously, what's wrong with the quote you've selected?

It reads as if Roo had never played for West, just recruited from their country zone.

Being a bit pedantic I'd think. Oh well, play on.

Fair enough, I just thought it omitted the relevant point.

It depends on how you look at it.

Some might favour the emphasis on our excellent country area, DW :D

Bit like saying Hawthorn recruited Platten from a Central Districts Country Zone IMO

And I am sure there would be a stink about that at Centrelink Central

It just sounds to me like they were trying to say he was a west lad.

I'd just think they're trying to say that short of getting Kerls back to sort them out then Roo is about the only bloke with any connection to the club who might be willing to give it a crack.

Where are all the former Westies players anyway? Not many of them seen to have stayed in footy - or at least not to the same extent that guys from say North or Sturt or Centrals seem to. Lots of Port guys around the traps too.

But where are guys like Lindner, Luders, Borchard, Belton, Fielke etc...

Borchard is helping the Glenelg twos at the minute, looks like he could still go around too....
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

I see a quite a few ex Westies players at games...Luders son plays in the 2's and Randall Bennett is a regular, The great little Bernie conlen is always there. Some ex players do have lives outside of footy as do a lot of SANFL supporters and you can't expect them to be there every week.

Oh, I agree that many ex-players at all clubs have successful lives outside of footy, but Westies just don't seem to have as many ex-players turn out in the coaching arena as other clubs.

Just an observation really... and given you're in the market for a new coach I was wondering if anyone from the past was in the hunt...

Kieran Sporn coaches the Under 15's.

The past players had an excellent attendance at their get-together at a game earlier this year and I think there will be plenty there again at their legends game soon.

Apart from that, they are all at the Bay - Mickan, Godden, Borchard, Chandler, Lewis, Horan, Backwell, etc :)

I imagine - indeed, I hope - that Tony Burgess has his CV in order. I'd like to see him get a gig at league level.

Maybe Westies should look interstate for their next coach, could help bring players to the club.

They've not needed help in the past. Just needed help in retaining them.

Good luck to West on their hunt. It's going to require a very special coach to lead the club away from the culture that's developed there.

West's juniors have been excellent for much of the past decade, but it hasn't translated to senior success, hopefully that can change.

They will be advertising nation wide for a coach within a few weeks. By all reports the new coach will be named sometime in October as some applicants may still be involved with finals somewhere. I wouldn't mind being a fly on the wall at all of the interviews. :D
