Coaches from the AFL

Postby pipers » Wed Jul 25, 2007 11:09 pm

OK, so with Sheedy leaving Essendon there are now four former AFL coaches on the market. Presumably some of them will simply change to another AFL job. But would any come to the SANFL?

And would any SANFL club take any of them on?

Obviously their salaries might be prohibitive, but if the choice was SANFL or nothing, would they take the pay cut?

They'd probably go for an AFL assistant job first or a Media gig ....

I guess if nothing comes up maybe they'd come here?

Not many have come over from head coaching jobs at VFL/AFL in the last 20-30 years .... if any?

I think it would be a smart move by a club to sign a Pagan or a Daniher etc, but I really cant see those blokes coming to the SANFL to coach.

Good Q anyway.

Without looking into it too much, I think Ken Sheldon was the last coach to come from the AFL.

Sheldon came after Cahill's return though. Was he head coach at an AFL club though?

Yes, he was the coach of St.Kilda from 1990-1993. Although his stint at South doesn't exist according to wiki. ;) This would mean that he was the last coach to come directly from the AFL to the SANFL the following year.

I'm pretty sure Sheldon coached St Kilda for a few years. I can still recall that outburst towards Craig Devonport in the early 90's.

Notso came to Glenelg from the AFL - although he was an assistant coach.

Sheedy would retire before coaching here IMHO. Would at a stretch coach a VFL team but with offers from Richmond and probably Essendon and the AFL soon (and who knows what other clubs) to be involved in some non coaching role plus media offers to come pouring in there's no shortage of more lucrative offers for him. Might just retire. But if he loves coaching so much that' he'd be willing to coach outside the AFL then a VFL job would be a clear winner for him.

Blighty coached North Melbourne in 1981.

IIRC, he resigned after round sixteen with 6-10 record (?)

Roos missed the finals for the first time since 1973.

Read an article where he said coaching his peers - Greig, Schimma, Glendinning, Dench etc - was a much tougher job than he first thought.

Much tougher when he didn't play that well himself...
