umpire apologises

during the glenelg v south reserves game on saturday a glenelg player got a very very soft free kick (in the back) & after the umpire blew his whistle & was running in to mark the mark he said (quite clearly) "i'm sorry i know its soft but we're instructed to pay them even with the slightest of contact"

so that tells me the umpires dont like the rules anymore than we do, i think it should just be play on unless free kicks are blantant & obvious, not soft

Heard an AFL guy (may have been Hayden Hennedy?) say something similar a few months back.

Not trying to make a sweeping statement, but there's a fair case to suggest most umpires aren't happy with the new hands in the back interpretation.

Gieschen and the rules committee like it. It keeps them in jobs. Gives them something to change next season.

I hate them. They are fu**ing up the game.

If you can't coach a team, you sure as eggs shouldn't be let loose coaching the umpires...
Oh, and Demetriou is a **** and all...

No-one likes this interpretation and hopefully next year it will revert back to being a free kick for a "push" in the back, not merely placing your hands there or worse still, just trying to hold your ground and then having your opponent take a dive.
