Who benefits most if the Crows miss the finals?

Postby Hondo » Wed Aug 01, 2007 10:48 am

Which of the likely finalists have most to gain if the Crows miss the September action?

Off the top of my head it looks like North (Perrie, Gill) and the Eagles (Vince, McGregor and possibly Shirley) have the most to gain from having Crows-listed players definitely available for SANFL finals.

But also:

Sturt - possibly Mattner, needs 2 more games?
Bays - Douglas
Central - Griffin
Port - Maric
Norwood - Campbell, Jericho
In between signatures .....

Who benefits most? Probably Power fans!

Always hard to know, despite qualification, which players an AFL club will allow to play in the local finals series.

You can take Norwood out of the equation, they won't be playing finals ... From the list you've provided I would agree with North and Eagles being the biggest beneficiaries.

Is debatable whether or not anyone 'benefits'...

Niel Craig has been VERY reluctant to release players for finals matches in the past.
(Somewhat IRONIC considering his stance whilst Norwood Coach)

Cases in point...

Bock, McGregor, Vince, Henschel, Knights, Shirly, Skipworth (did play '06) but...

All have been stopped by the COWS from playing in Grand Finals & Finals in the past, even when they have 'qualified' easily with the amount of games in a season.

COWS invariable make them unavailable by sending them off to hospital for 'joint cleaning'.

Agree with LEH. If the Crows miss the finals there is more chance they'll pull their players out as they still need to give them holidays/end of season surgery and won't want any of their players starting pre-season up to a month after the rest of the group.

Eagles have Vince and McGregor qualified. Nil chance of McGregor playing, but Vince should be allowed to play given he has spent the majority of the season with us, but you never know.

Perrie has played only one for North and I would say he won't play anymore given the Crows injury. I can't see him getting dropped so he won't be available which won't hurt, as often too many AFL players coming back unbalance the set-up more often than not.

LEH, how many of those guys you named have actually played for the eagles in the finals? I think most if not all played finals for you at some stage. I think your conspiracy theory is flawed.

The question really is mainly which players have qualified/will qualify for SANFL finals that would be playing AFL finals. Gill looks likely to play for the crows for the remainder of the season, while the others I would think would come into the mix would be Maric and McGregor. The others are either playing SANFL or look unlikely to qualify.

Have you seen Perrie when he is playing for north C_P. Some might see that as a penalty rather than a gain

If both Perrie and Gill play for us, then the balance is restored :D

As we all support different teams do we all pay that much attention to what happens re the AFL.
The Eagles reserves made the finals last year because the Crows said Macgregor could not play in the league grandfianl. And Fuller stood his ground and played him and Vince as well(i think ) in the twos .this resulted in the two's scrapping into the finals.
As i undertsand it the EAGLES have learn't not to rely on CROWS or power players playing for them.
And this year only Vince and macgregor have played for the EAGLES with perhaps Shirley coming back or Biglands from injury.
I can still remember the finals with disinterested crows players in EAGLES jumpers. Not a history I like to recall.

I also recall the S/F against the Eags a few years ago when Mattner and Reilly were shipped to Brisbane, flew back the night before and were almost worthless.

Not that Reilly was worth anything when playing at Sturt... Based on his SANFL form I'm staggered he has played as much AFL as he has.
