Defeat from the jaws of victory WA style

Postby bosvit » Sun Aug 05, 2007 10:44 am

What a season West Adelaide could of had, Weed would have been a hero not the villain he has turned out to be portraid.

Can you remember a season that a team has had the lead 1/2 way through the 3rd quarter and lost pretty much all of them.

The game against the Bays yesterday is at least the 4th time this year.

I think South and especially Port have got away with a lot this year and if we had have had the season we could have both these teams would be copping a lot more grief than they are now.

And if we had not given the Bays that massive confidence boost last round who knows what would have happened to them????

Confidence is an amazing thing, as is learning how to win, having neither at the moment makes for frustrating viewing

Agreed, Westies seriously pushed Sturt in each of their 3 matchups this year and were very unlucky to have not snagged at least one of them. Must be frustrating but hopefully good times are around the corner for Westies.

In Rd 3 they snatched victory from the jaws of defeat at the Bay.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Sort of.

We did at the start of the year and were winning a bit and being very competitive just through pure effort.

Lost our way through the middle totally and are now starting to put some good pressure on again.

I missed the Westies V Glenelg game on sat, one of the few for the year, so its a litle hard to comment but against Sturt it was our pressure on the player that reduced Sturt's skill level in the end but once again it was our inability to convert effort into goals far more than it had anything to do with umpires making bad decisions.

In my opinion, West Adelaide failed to handle the guernsey clash as well as the Bays. If West had worn it's red guernsey then it might have won.

An outsider's amateur opinion here, but perhaps if West are pushing opponents for the best part of a game then it doesn't (to me) sound like a confidence issue, but more of a fitness/stamina issue, which (at least in part) relates back to depth and playing "stock". At least prima facie (i.e. 'at first appearance'), relative positions of all four grades may tend to back this up, as well as the view that 'the Weed' may well have copped more blame than was due.

Confidence and self belief are amazing things, and compliment a winning expectation, culture, fitness and direction. Do others - especially West fans - agree with this and if so, how well are all these factors being addressed at West, particularly in light the changes that have recently occurred there?

I partially agree with you straydog but we came back very strongly against Sturt last week after having worked very hard for little result for the first 3 quarters.

It seems to me more to be that when the opposition get a couple back on us we clam up and look scared to make a mistake and therefore hang onto the ball waiting for the perfect pass etc.

I am sure that lack of depth and inexperience and lack of overall fitness play strong parts but I think there are other problems down at Richmond and we seem to have forgotten how to win.

Well IMHO anyway
