Souths coach for 2008

Postby Sojourner » Wed Aug 08, 2007 7:51 pm

With recent events, no doubt advertisments will soon be going out for the coaching position at South Adelaide, here is my list of potential coaches that they should approach, feel free to add to it!

John Schneebichler - A champion South player in the 1980's, won many many games off his boot alone. Easily the best South Adelaide player of the 1980's. A proven SANFL coach at Glenelg juniors. My personal first choice for the job.

Luke Darcy - It wouldnet be a bad move for South to recruit a coach that is a champion AFL player and in touch with modern AFL coaching methods. Darcy wore the jumper for the Panthers as did his Father David. Darcy is a good example of someone who if brought into the club would have no doubt at all about his commitment to South Adelaide and his passion for the South Adelaide jumper. He would be able to coach by example and would have instant respect from the playing group.

Scott Watters - ex West Coast, Sydney and Freo AFL player, winner of several best and fairest awards, a great WA footballer with talent to burn. Current coach of Subiaco and has won the premiership with them once and a good chance of doing so again. A proven example of an AFL player that has made the jump to coaching and is successfull at it.

Michael Nunan - Michael coaches with a particuarly tough hard gritty style of football, South could do with toughening up on the field as I think that this is one of our major problems at present. The job that Nunan did with North is not unlike our situation now, Nunan made North competitive and led the club to win a premiership as a result. However in order to do the job he has to be given full support to clean out the list and recruit the staff that he needs to do the job. Nunan is a natural leader and has to be able to work that way or it wont come off.

Phil Carman Took Sturt from an absolute basket case and made them competitive, did the job with slow steady persistance like a hammer on cold steel. South members must believe in him and have patience if he is to achieve the same result with the Panthers.

Geez, Nunan would be a huge get for South

Is he still in the candidates ring tho? My impression was that he had moved on from coaching a long time ago? Working in the Sports Science area was the last I heard.

Nunan's no chance, doesn't even watch footy these days, is involved heavily with his company and Adelaide United at the moment.

All would for varying reasons be ideal.
I think Bickley, if you could prise him away from the news desk would make a fine coach. He has the runs on the board in the respect department.

Would have Mark Bickley for the job in an instant if he was interested, yet like Gary Lyon he is making a career in the media that South would have little hope of offering him a retainer anything close to what he is on now. :(

A 100K+ annually for 3 years contract waved under his nose might soon perk up his interest!

You'd think Carman would be putting his hand up. He wanted to come back to Sturt to have another crack.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

Is John Cahill available ?
Seriously I think South need someone from outside the club to bring some new culture to the club. Been down too long...the last great revival was Neil Kerly...need a similar culture shock I think.

Darren Travena?
But it was more than a victory for Greece. It was a stirring example to free people throughout the world of what a few brave men can accomplish once they refuse to submit to tyranny.

Not too sure about that.

I've been lead to believe that he became fairly disillusioned with their inability to run a chook raffle down there.

So unless he feels he can do the full culture change thing maybe he might pass.

Plus he will have to give up his part time stone masonry.

Don Scott?

Greg Anderson?

Or what about the care taker coach at Melbourne, he's on track to be the first care taker ever sacked, he might be ok!

PS I think Pottsy would be an interesting choice, highly regarded in the Southern League, (so was BH), would give the club some cred. in their heart land.
He's still my hero even if he is a little bit crap.

What about Luke Norman? He seems to have got himself a pretty good reputation in his short time in assistant coaching. Has been with the Eagles in 2006 and followed MacGowan to Sturt this year. The West job might be a little close to home given he played there only two years ago. Maybe South is a good opportunity for him? He seems a strong character.
