Who's going to Sneak into the 5 now?

Postby Wedgie » Sun Aug 12, 2007 7:24 pm

Very interesting now with Port having a much easier run home than the Bays, by my calculations it could come down to percentage unless the Bays beat a Sturt, North or Eagles.
The Bays need to beat one side higher on the ladder than them and they will be there for the first time since 1999!

Just expanding a touch on what Wedgie has already said: Both Glenelg and Port play Sturt. Glenelg's other games are versus North and WWT, whereas Port play Norwood and West. Given equivalent results v Sturt, it's not out of the question that Port can make up the two game deficit and bridge the percentage gap with Glenelg.

Assuming neither Port nor Glenelg win any of their last three, Norwood must win three of their last four games to jump into 5th. Barring further draws (obviously), Norwood's percentage is irrelevant - and over 40 goals behind Port anyway. Besides playing Port, Norwood face West, Centrals and South.

My money's on Port at this point - just.

Hmmm Bayman and I might like to have a wager with you, we have an extra $1k that we should be missing!!!

interesting most give us no chance against the 3 teams we have to play yet have beaten both of them convincingly this year and we are overdue to beat the Eagles

You might be overdue to beat the Eagles but the key to it is Dutchy to beat the Eagles you need to have hunger, passion and desire none of these words are in the bays vocabulary. You won't beat us and you'd be hard pressed to beat either North or Sturt. If you do win any of these there's no doubting you deserve to play finals footy.

Mark Mickan is the coach that put us into the five in 1999 when we were tipped to be bottom that year. Glenelg finished in the same position as Eagles did in 1998, and I am confident that Glenelg will make the 5 this year. I would love to see Glenelg in the 5.

It is conceivable that Glenelg's quest for an Elimination final berth will come down to the final round match against the Eagles.

And their prize, should they succeed, will probably be a rematch with the Eagles. :?

To add weight to the irony, the Qualifying final will likely also be a rematch of a final round fixture.

That's right, all clubs have hunger, passion and desire, it's a matter of showing it. And I think that Glenelg over the last two years are getting it together. And lol at the Billy Madison reference. ;)

Port supporters might be more concerned (if they haven't already given up hope). Just about everything I've touched just lately has turned to pudding

Seriously though, the Tigers are one/one with Sturt (granted the win at Adelaide was a few goals more than the loss at Unley - and more recent) and beat North by 8 goals at the Bay in their only match this season. North at Prospect in a fortnight may be a different matter given that they're fighting for a top three spot. Possible that all three of Glenelg's remaining opponents could be in that boat when Glenelg play them - including Sturt - if the Eagles can keep winning and bite into the (current) 22 goal percentage gap against over the next couple of weeks. Who knows?

I, too, would love to see Glenelg at the 'Oval come September. I was at AO when they fell at the last minor round post last year, and kind of felt for them. Those ones hurt. Lets hope, for their sakes, that it hurt enough.

As a North supporter as far as a possible opponent goes in the finals Im not concerned if its Port or Glenelg, simple fact is that if we find ourselves playing the 5th side then we're probably out of reach of the ultimate goal anyway, plus both sides beat us by similar margins last time. Port did beat us on the larger ground which will be closer to the finals dimensions though.
BUT from a SANFL fan who has a soft spot for the Bays and in-laws that barrack for the Bays Im in 2 minds as it would be great to see them in the finals but it would be funny to be able keep ribbing Bays fans on here about them being the only team not to play finals this century. Mind you, it would be just as funny if Port came 6th with the side on paper they have.

As stated all year (even while Glenelg were bottom and really struggling) Glenelg will make the finals and will win at least one final, if not more. Underestimate them at your peril!
