With the talk on here regarding the annoyance with 'Heckle & Jeckle' on 5GAYFL, I had a thought...

Have RPH (or even LIFE FM for that matter) approached Andrew Pearce about a RIVAL Saturday Sports Show for the winter months of season 2008 ?

It appears that this site gets enough 'hits' about SANFL to suggest that there are enough potential listeners out there for a purely, SANFL show to rival the often stale & same old topics based show on AA.

I seem to recall a certain 'David Wildy' got his start on RPH in a similar format show in the early 90's.

Had a similar thought myself, not trying to steal your thunder leh, but a very good idea, maybe nightly talk-back from 5-6pm Monday-Friday would get a good response (indeed).

Hey that could catch on?

Primarliy SANFL with a dash of SAAFL, HFL, BLGFL and SFL here and there (even just 5 mins each to read out the matches for the day plus a spot preview of the match of the day).

You could maybe have 10-15 mins at the end for the AFL (you would have to give it some sort of mention to appeal to the broadest audience, who could be enlightened by the coverage of the SANFL and local footy). The AFL could be covered as a 1-2 min preview for the 7 remaining games and ensure that it doesn't bombard the show like so many other shows do.

Darley16 - Even if it was 5pm-6pm on Mondays (SANFL review) and Fridays (SANFL preview) it would be a good start.

Generally it all comes down to money for stuff like this.

Usually stations will charge a fee for airspace and the cost depends on who you are and what you want to do - one community station here in Perth allows sporting groups to present a 1/2 hour or 1 hour show on a Sunday morning over a 20-25 week run (i.e. a season) for a couple of grand, with a possible variance depending on the timeslot.

From there you knock up a major sponsor for between $750-$1000 (i.e. the SANFL Footy Show brought to you by XYZ, who will get a mention going into and coming out of each break plus an advert in each break) and between $250-$500 for a couple of advertisers/segment sponsors, plus $100 for a minor sponsor. That way costs should be covered.

What we need is a second talk back radio / sports station to compete with 5AA.

Considering the resources that they have to work with, 5RPH do a pretty good job. I would like to see them alter their format to be more in line with what AA are doing to grab some of their audience. The talkback radio could be run pretty well in conjunction with their reading of news items from newspapers. Then at 4pm have a sports show through to 7pm to compete directly with 5AA. I am sure there would be several people in the footy community keen to embark on a career in the media that might appreciate the start at 5RPH.
