R21 Port v Norwood Review

Postby Macca19 » Sat Aug 25, 2007 6:45 pm

The Magpies have farewelled loyal clubman Jared Poulton in style, coming away with a famous 11 point victory at Alberton Oval today.

Four unanswered goals - including two rippers from Justin Perkins - saw them overcome a 10 point defecit during the last quarter.

When Luke Jericho cooly snapped his 4th goal halfway through the last quarter, the Redlegs led by 10 points for the second time and seemed to have broken the spirit of the Magpies. But the Magpies dug deep, and found inspiration in the retiring Jared Poulton, who kicked two goals in his last game at Alberton Oval.

Luke Slattery started the run with a long goal from outside 50, before 16 year old whiz kid Sam Mardling kicked his second to put the Magpies back in front. Then Justin Perkins stepped up with a magnificent multi-bounce run on the Grandstand wing before classily slotting a goal from the bowling club pocket which sent the home crowd into a frenzy. Another goal from Perkins on a similar angle minutes later sealed the win.

In what was a see-sawing battle all day, both sides had extended periods of time where they dominated over their opponent. Norwood jumped out of the blocks, leading by four goals late in the 1st quarter, before two Jeremy Clayton goals pegged the margin back to 12 points at the first break.

The second quarter saw the Magpies take control of the contest, kicking six goals to one in one of the more impressive quarters of football they have played this season. Jeremy Clayton slotted two more to make it four for the half, whilst whilst Daniel Hargraves had two goals to half time.

In a repeat of the 1st quarter, Norwood kicked the first three goals of the third quarter, after being the beneficiary of numerous umpiring decisions. It was a spiteful quarter and the Magpies gave away numerous free kicks which resulted in goals to their opponents.

The last quarter was a fitting end to a tight battle against two of the SANFLs most traditional rivals. Both clubs kicking in front of goal largely affected the result, with Norwood wasting numerous chances in front of goal in the third quarter. On the other side, Port Adelaide will be glad to win one because of accurate kicking, having lost a few matches this year thanks to poor kicking in front of goal.

After an up and down year, Jeremy Clayton showed he still has plenty of magic, with 4 goals in the first half, whilst Brad Murray and Nathan Krakouer were influential in the final result. The Magpies had numerous multiple goalkickers, including five goals between defenders Justin Perkins and Jared Poulton.

Luke Jericho kicked five for Norwood, whilst James Gallagher was outstanding in the loss, kicking three goals. Heath Culpitt and Adam Cockshell also performed well for the Redlegs.

With Glenelg having won, neither side is now a chance at making the finals in 2007.

I don't know what planet the scoreboard operator was on at Richmond; he had Port as 15.10 and Norwood as 15.9 at one stage. Sounded like a fantastic game, another great advertisment for the SANFL on the TV.

Agreed with most here

Best game of football I have seen all year. Great endorsement for the league and a great win for Poults - a true champion to the 'pies

Well thats twogames Port has been involved in the last three weeks. The one at the Bay was good too plenty of players going in for teh footy, no quarter asked or given, both sides playing attacking footy.

it too was a great advertisement for SANFL footy

You forgot the part where Pahrrr took Lower out of our starting line-up, Zorzi injured early in 1st qtr and that filthy sniper wharfie #7 cleaned up Borlace from behind with his elbow. Yeah, great win you filthy maggots, hang your hat on that! You'll play as many finals as we do - none! At least our future looks allright with the 2s performing well, whereas the swampies have gone backward for the 2nd year in a row!

I managed to get home from Richmond in time to see the last couple of minutes of the match on ABC. Great tv watching Poulton address the players after the game and then sing the song in the middle of the group with the 1st gamer. Well done on a great career Jared Poulton. If all in black and white showed the character and love of the jumper this guy does they would be playing finals, that's for sure.

Ahh,gracious in defeat,a trait we all aspire too.

Luke jericho was given a lesson.Instead of admiring the memory of your fourth goal, pick up your player and prevent him,as a half back, from creating run from the back half.

Perkins left him not once, but twice in the last 5 minutes to kick 2 great goals and snuff out any impact Jericho's 4 goals had one the game.Neil Craig and Jericho can review it mid week.
If you want to go quickly, go alone.

If you want to go far, go together.
