Scratching of cars-is it safe to "show your true colours"?

Postby Ecky » Mon Aug 27, 2007 12:01 pm

On Saturday I parked my (almost brand new) car on one of the side streets near Prospect, and when I returned I found a 2m long scratch on the driver's side of it. I am presuming it was done by an angry North supporter, seeing that I have my Glenelg stickers proudly displayed on the back window. (although I guess there is the possibility that is was just some stupid kids who had nothing to do with North)
So it makes me wonder
 Was I unlucky and this was a one-off incident, and I shouldn't worry about displaying my footy allegiance on my car?
or
 Am I foolish to display stickers on my car, knowing that there are a number of so-called "supporters" (from various teams) who are prone to this sort of despicable behaviour?

It is a pity if people feel that they can't display club stickers on their cars, as these are great free promotional tools for the SANFL - makes people driving around realise "oh, there still are people who really do care about the local league"

I would be interested to hear other people's views on this issue.

must admit i have never had any trouble and that goes back 25 years, but there is always a risk when you have any sort of sporting club sticker on you car and you are at teh opposition venue

I feel sorry for you ecky. That is a disgrace. You should contact the NAFC and see what they will do about it or what advice they give you.

I hope people keep displaying their stickers on their cars. It's good for the SANFL. However, after what happened to your car and what happened to an Eagles car after a game at Woodville against Central a couple of years ago, I'd be thinking twice about putting my club stickers on my car.

Why blame the NAFC??? It could have been done by anyone.

Of course it could. But I think the NAFC should at least be made aware of what has happened so they can try and do something about it or prevent it happening in the future.

And...what can they do?

Provide safe and secure parking and allow only cars with club stickers to use it?

At least you know it wasn't me Ecky, not my signature move....

Seriously, whoever did it (footy related or not)- it's sensless vandalism.

I would like to think that football supporters can ride highs & lows, without resorting to this heinous act.

Provide a security presence around the nearby streets perhaps?

My club pays extra for security so people feel safer, perhaps North could pay extra for security so I can feel safer about my car bring parked nearby?

initally for about a week I assumed that this was the case as I discovered the damage in 2 stages the first was the make's badge was missing then about 3 days later more damage was discovered. I have since ruled this out but it has make me wonder about secure parking of vehicles at suburban grounds

Not a bad idea at all - reward those who show their true colours with a premium park at the game!

So the 2 metre scratch would have circled the whole car?

It would've been worth him doing it, just so you could catch him doing it.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

Always risky putting stickers on your car, be they political, sporting, humorous, etc, etc...
