Think The Sweeny look with a bit of sci-fi...sort of.

...and of course it stars the yummy Philip Glenister

True, although they occasionally hit the right buttons, but they did do the 70's cop show thing pretty well...Kojak, Starsky and Hutch, Barney Miller so going back to the 'who loves ya baby' or the Huggy Bear types might work.
