Is it worth reading? Mallett seems to be on a mission to do a biography of every Australian who has ever played Test cricket. A lot of them are the same re-hased old stories from the 70's - have read Ian Chappell's which was fair to reasonable, didn't think Doug Walters was as good, although reading about his younger days was more interesting.

Sorry 'FH', just found your question.
Yeah it's worth a read. There are some interesting insights and funny tales, but be aware that
Mallet sometimes jumps in with his take on events when you think it's still Thommo or someone
else being quoted. Can be a little confusing until you get used to it.

I'm not an overly huge fan of the work that Mallett does.
I feel like I've read it all before.

I wish I'd paid more attention in science class. Think I've bitten off more than I can chew with this one.
The Big Bang, gravitational red shifts, backwards-in-time causation, cosmic microwave background.
I'm way out of my depth with this one, but loving every moment. Unless you're an Astro Physicist,
don't try too hard to get you're head around every concept, just enjoy the wild ride.
Paul Davies is a genius who writes about stuff way above the average head in a way that brings
it down low enough for the common bloke to take a peek.
At 59 pages in, I'm not sure if I've become exceptionally well educated, or utterly confused.
Is the universe like Goldilock's porridge, just right for life ?
:-??
One thing for sure, after reading this book, I'll never again look at the night sky in quite the same way !

If you like this, but find it heavy going, then try "The Matter Myth" by Davies & Gribbin. This is a bit old now (20 years at least, not sure if there was ever an updated edition) but is a very readable low-level introduction into certain areas of theoretical physics. I have read a few other Davies titles (eg The Mind Of God), and agree that his writing can be a little mind bending. The Matter Myth is one of his more accessible works.

Cheers 'Pseudy', I'll look out for that.
My (year 12) son handed me the Goldilocks Enigma, no doubt hoping it would show me up.
But I'm calling his bluff by thoroughly enjoying it. If he's within earshot when I get to sections
that have me struggling, I just say things like..."That makes sense", "Yes I can see that", or my
favourite..."I thought so!"
I might be a total fraud, but it makes the young bloke delve ever deeper into his scientific
studies in order to find something that will finally bewilder his old man.
My pride and his eagerness won't allow me to fes-up to the fact that he had me on toast 5 years ago !

Thanks Sabre, hopefully will get around to it shortly.
And I know what you mean about Mallett putting his view or his stories into the book.

Urghhhh.....

Great ideas, great vision of the future, but a completely cr@p story. Was dead bored with this halfway through. Forced myself to finish it.

Have also read "The Difference Engine" by Gibson and Bruce Sterling. Again, great premise, but an utterly sh!t read. Actually gave up with only the final chapter to go; I'd had enough.

For good Gibson try "Burning Chrome", his collection of short stories. He's fine at the short stuff, he just has no idea how to spin an idea into a long story.

I was sorting things out in the shed, rummaging through some old boxes of books. I came across this one....

Image

..... that I must have borrowed from my high school over 20 years ago (its got the standard school library stamps on the inside cover). Not sure why they didn't send me a letter or call (I assume they had student records kept somewhere) to get it back. I enjoyed it all those years ago so I started reading it again and, so far, it's as good as I remember. Gonna send it back as soon as I've finished it.
Crooked as a hooker.
Now suck my thumb.
Anybody wanna come get some?

Bart - My Life
Bart Cummings autobiography
Haven't looked through the thread to see if it's been mentioned.
Excellent read, written at the level you can imagine him talking, rather than being spruced up by a ghost writer.
I didn't know he lived more than half his life in South Australia.
