What are you reading now?

Movies, TV Shows, Fringe, etc.

We didnt read any of them. I found out about them from researching on the internet just after I left school.

We didnt really have compulsory reading after year 8 or 9. I remember we read the Rohan of Rin books, and had activities to do, and we read one about a teenage boy, which had story lines regarding puberty and stuff.

After that, we just wrote essays and stuff in English.

Australian Football has been salvaged?!? A clear case of the winners of the war writing history to suit themselves. Maybe the VFL was saved, but the sport itself has been thoroughly rogered at every level. Garbage AFL revisionism.

The Sounds of Summer - Jim Maxwell's memoir.

Just finished it.
Poor Jim had a stroke in August, so not sure how that affected the book, but imagine it was well into writing given it came out a couple months later.
Honestly, a little bit light. He goes through his life, which is interesting enough, but not as many in-depth insights or thoughts that I would have expected from someone so revered.

I believe the Port Adelaide AFL bid from 1989 plays an interesting role in this book and, more so, unveils some aspects not known previously by the wider public.

Rusty, can you elaborate?

The Price of Valour by John Hamilton. It's the story of Gallipoli VC winner Hugo Throssell. A very good book and a stark reminder that the ending of a war doesn't necessarily mean the end of the pain and struggle for the participants or their families.

Started this one yesterday. The only thing Im not liking about this is how the author is describing how the victim felt before and during the murders. They've fleshed out what happened with emotion and things like the victims thoughts, which obviously couldn't be known, because they were dead 10 seconds later.

Just at the point of Gacy hiring the author as his lawyer, so now Im assuming it will focus more on the legal and court room aspect.

Its a good read so far.

I think his lawyer showed true grit by defending a killer

Felt like some lighter reading so borrowed a few autobiographies recently

Lenny Hayes- Pretty standard and safe footy bio, looking back at his footy journey in chronological fashion. Plenty of “yeah, I remember that game/incident” moments if you’re a St Kilda supporter, but perhaps wouldn’t hold too much interest for anybody else. Loses points for referring to the sport as AFL throughout (ie I played AFL for Pennant Hills U8s), a pet peeve of mine. An easy read, and a good recap of 15+ years of the club.

Nick Riewoldt- Different to the Hayes book in that each chapter takes on a theme (ie leadership, public spotlight, family). Very self-critical at times and refreshingly honest. Focussed more on his personal life and also the behind the scenes footy stuff, as opposed to the on-field happenings. One of the more interesting footy bios I’ve read (not that I’ve read a heap).

Kurt Fearnley- Didn’t know much about Fearnley apart that he’d won a few wheelchair races. Refreshing attitude towards life. The Kokoda and Sydney-Hobart stories particularly eye-opening. Interesting reading about the day-to-day challenges/discrimination he still faces.
