Your favourite US sitcoms/comedies from yesteryear..

Postby GWW » Mon Aug 02, 2010 12:02 am

By yesteryear i mean pre 1990.

My 5 favourites would be:

1) Family Ties - my all time favourite tv show
2) Diff'rent Strokes - loved it as a kid, probably went for a season or 2 too long though
3) Growing Pains - similar, to Family Ties, although not quite as good
4) Get Smart - my favourite comedy from the 1960's
5) Happy Days - enjoyed watching it after getting home from school

Starting with one I have vague memories of loving as a very small child...

Green Acres (I think that was the title...starred Eva Gabor, Zsa Zsa'a sister)
Adams Family
The Munsters
Rowan and Martin's Laugh-in
Batman

Probably loads more I've forgotten.

Ah yes, Batman, i think that would have been equally as entertaining behind the scenes as what appeared on screen :)

Ah but as I was only about 7yo when it was on I wouldn't have had any knowledge or much interest in what went on off-screen ;)

A few more I just remembered...

M.A.S.H.
Can I count the original Lost In Space
Barney Miller
Benson

I used to love Diff'rent Strokes and Mork and Mindy. Didn't mind The Greatest American Hero when that was on and Get Smart was always good to watch too. It's probably funnier now....
I love grapes. With grapes, you always get another chance. You know, if you have a crappy apple or a peach, you’re stuck with that crappy piece of fruit. If you have a crappy grape, no problem-just move on to the next. ‘Grapes: The Fruit of Hope.

As a youngster Mork and Mindy and Different Strokes were probably the main ones (that I can think of at the moment), but Cheers was and always will be a classic show IMHO.

Just looked it up on YouTube...I can remember the opening credits and theme song even though I was very, very, very small lol. sounds like your dad and mine would get on well

I'll also add to the list with...

The Monkees...for some reason my dad tolerated my liking for them but not the Beatles :?
Alias Smith and Jones...my first serious crush...Pete Duel...was inconsolable as a 10yo when he killed himself :(

Anyone remember The Ghost and Mrs Muir?

Remember being glued to that as a young tacker. Still remember the theme song...

I can remember that, used to be on the ABC from memory. I was too young really to understand what it was about though.

Is it the same story as the lovely old film with Rex Harrison and Gene Tierney? I don't remember a tv series too.

On the subject of the supernatural...

Bewitched...how I wished I could do magic like Samantha as long as I didn't have to marry a drip like Darrin first  aunt Clara was favourite cos her's all went wrong.

Bewitched was so popular in the US in the 60's, one of the opposition networks devised an opposition "supernatural" show, I Dream of Jeannie, which was I think written by Sherwood Schwartz.
