Pain killing injections....?

What is every one's thought's on these injections? I for one would like to see them banned.For mine,if you need an injection to get out on the ground it is a performance enhancing drug,as with out it your performance would be severely hindered.

It was interesting to see Jarrod Crouch in Sydney did not want his current injury listed as anything specific as he felt it may come back to bite him ala: Mathew Lloyd V The Bulldogs with his broken hand,Jonathon Brown and Chad Cornes in 2004 GF.

So,should they be allowed,or banned?

The other side to the argument is they are just there to allow a player to perform to what he usually could anyway. Not to enhance performance as such. As long as the player is not in danger I see no problem with having an injection to get you through a game - especially a final.

If you didn't have pain killers, clubs would need about a hundred players on the list. You've got small lists, a fast game and some hard surfaces (enter Mr Mal Doom). If you want to see the best footballers, then painkillers are a fact of life. Get rid of them and careers would be shortened as some (not Chad Cornes though the girls blouse LOL) players would play on anyway.

The painkillers get the blokes on the field when they've got 'nigglys' perhaps at the cost of a decent life after football but these blokes would know in this day and age that there is a short shelf life in this line of work and that they should be setting themselves up now. You can't get a kick if you aren't on the field and players have been delisted for not being able to get on the park so you can understand a player's position vis a vis pain killers.

Painkillers should also be mandatory for all Geelong supporters.

The other question this raises,who will be the first cunning legal eagle to help a player fight in court a case relating to long term injury caused by the club's neglect to their "duty of care",by letting this player play with injury and then having on going medical issue's as a result of playing with pain killing injections?

I certainly don't consider painkillers to be "Performance Enhancing" as such, just as Panadol and the like aren't, and at first I just thought it shoudl be a case of player choice ... However, upon further reflection, these injections have the capacity to add to permanent impairment for players, and possibly produce a financial drain on the league (with the advent of the recent "X-Men")!

I think if they are to remain as is (or left to player choice) then the league has to find a way of forcing the clubs to take on the responsibility for whatever adverse affect they might have down the track (playing years and beyond).

Looks like Aaron Keating might have answered your question Boon. I would be interested to see whether the facts are actually as he says they are. Can't see Brian Sando holding the positions he has over the years if he couldn't pick a broken pelvis.

On the topic of painkillers, it is the players choice but they say that now, that doesn't mean they won't try and take legal action against the AFL or whatever other body they may see fit.
Think that the plights of Garry Hocking, Steven Febey, Bowen Lockwood, etc are proof that this is a far bigger concern than the public realises.
As we know, pain is the body's way of saying "stop, I can't do this", so to take a painkilling injection is accelerating damage- long term damage at that- significantly.
This is obviously something that is occuring at SANFL level as well.
A shame that we as human beings can't live in an older persons body for a week when we are say, 21 years of age.
Did anyone read the article in the Advertiser a few weeks back about Bowen Lockwood?

I sure did ORDB,was a sad sight/story indeed,the young bloke had a lot of ability.Just as with the Roger James story,spend's one day a week in pain.Something must,and will be done about these injections.Keating as you said may have just started the ball rolling.

Keating upon breaking his wrist, says to the club Doctor "how will it heal, will I ever be able to play footy again?"
"Of course you will!" says the doctor.
