ADVERTISER 22/07/06 re: Andrew Mcleod foot surgery.
______________________________________________________

....Mcleod has conceded he can no longer play without surgery to
remove the bursa fom his left foot. He can no longer take pain
killing injections. He is expected to see a surgeon on Monday and
miss as many as three matches................................................

________________________________________________________

We have had some debates on this site about medical incompetence
at the St. Kilda and Western Bulldogs football clubs.
Both clubs allowed a player each this year to play on with suspect knees
during matches this year and it has been well documented that these
players are out for the season, the critiscm in my view justified.
However the handling of Andrew Mcleod's well known foot injury needs
to be scrutinised now by the same critics in the right context.
This was an injury that was first exposed at about the split round round
12 in mid-June, as to whether Mcleod should rest, play or have surgery.
With Mcleod being a valuable commodity to the Crows finals aspirations,
surgery should have been done at that stage.
Now Mcleod will miss huge games v WC + CO in the next 2 weeks and will
be out until possibly round 20.
Should Mcleod have had surgery earlier ?
Did the Medicos get it wrong at the club?
I think they got it wrong, imagine if there is a complication and Mcleod is
out for 5-6 weeks making him unavailable until the finals .
Im sure if this was SK the Safooy experts wOuld be dining on this one.
What do the experts think ?

Righto mal i'll get it started,

now is the best time to fix this problem as it has shown that with careful management the injury will not get him through the rest of the season. the medicos at the club were required to make a judgement to say if McLeod could get through the season. unfortunatlely the medical staff have got it wrong and surgery is required. it is not incompentence as they have been able to manage the injury for a month and it has obviously has not improved at all. now im no doctor but the way the procedure is described in the media that it is minor one and out for 2 to 3 weeks as you have suggested. IMHO it is best to avoid surgery where ever it is possible and this is the postion the Crows took 4 weeks ago but it has shown that now it is unavoidable. the docs to a gamble and lost.

Been watching McLeod run in recent matches and he moves better injured than I do fully fit. Age is a terrible thing!! McLeod should have had the surgery during the break (thus missing the Geelong game LOL) and missed one less match but Adelaide are flying so as long as the surgery goes well for Andrew there shouldn't be a problem.

The only team I can envisage taking the flag ahead of Adelaide at this stage is the Demons. Melbourne are undefeated at the G this year and West Coast's hold on second spot is dodgy at the moment.

regards,

Mal - he has played for the past 5 or 6 years with very little cartilage in his knee, meaning that swelling of the knee joint is unavoidable. Mcleod is thesort of player im sure where they trust him when he says he can manage the pain or not. I dont think the club would have made him play the past 4-5 weeks if foot wasnt able to be managed.
You can If you believe you can

I guess this shows the benefit of being games clear on top......

Hindsight is a wonderful thing if they knew what they know now, yes the right option would have been to go under the knife during the break....

With all overuse injuries, inflammation of the fat pads, bursitis etc there is a chance they can be managed/reduced with conservative treatments and work-load management - this would have been their thought process but unfortunately this didn't transpire. Obviously this isn't the case, so the best course of action is to get it done now have 3-4 weeks off and come back for the last 2-3 minor round games before the final.

The advantage of doing this now is with McLoeds well documented knee cartilage deficiencies, this is a perfect time to give him three weeks off his legs, do his fitness work on the bikes and in the pool, let his knee settle down and come back cherry ripe for the finals....

Mind you this was probably one of their options when they were looking at surgery prior to the break....

plan A) go under knife now mid season break
plan B) manage it and see if it settles down, if not surgery rd 15-16
plan C) manage it conservatively and he plays the season out.....
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

I think the Adelaide Medical staff timed it perfectly, lets not get too carried away with the Crows lost, the facts are the Crows will still finish minor premiers, the facts are the crows only have one more away game at the MCG and with only a handful of rounds remaining the crows are still one game and percentage on top.....

Personally given the crows situation a loss this time of the year may do more good then people think, Craigy now has some amo to keep THE BOYS focus not to mention it puts pressure on spots

I am not too concerned

You may not be concerned, but the coach and players might be.
1 win 4 losses to WC in the last 2 years is a big concern to me.
You are remarkable SD even in defeat you are contented.

Mal.

Mate just keeping it in context

Every side this year has been put to the sword, the crows have been emarkably consistent under craigy's leadership, I will be concerned if we have to front the Eagles again in WA but we are in control of our own destiny which means the next time we meet it may be GF Day....

If this is the case I would back my boys in against the Eagles at the MCG.......

i am looking forward to see how the club responds this week

If the crows come out and smash collingwood, then you have a right not to be concerned. But like always comes down to how they rebound the following week.

Mal,
the difference is that Adelaide knew that McLeod had something wrong with his foot, whereas down at the 'Aints, the Medical Staff entered Lenny Hayes (as he's crawling through the I/C gate on his hands & knees) in a triatholon, for the following day.

Jumped ship over to the Crows have you Mal?

The decision to hold off on the surgery isn't wrong it is the post acute care that is the problem.....Maybe an extra week off (in hindsight) would have been better in the long run...

Tassie a lot of people on this site have delighted in ridiculing
the Aint Kilda football club, at times I had to take a backseat
as the criticism was validated in some instances.
Now the so called professional Adimwitlaide football club have
exceeded the incompetence of the Aints on this one.
The Aints had half an afternoon to adjudicate on Hayes and
in the end f....d it up.
The Canarys had months to work out the Mcleod prognosis
and f.....d it up completely.
The so called training techniques of the Canarys a few weeks ago
has coincided with a mass of soft tissue injuries to a few players as
well, whats going on ?

Look on the face of it I agree with you this hasn't been a good year for injuries at West lakes and it appears clinical interventions or lack of clinical interventions may have contributed to those problems. However like all posters on this site I am uniformed and can merely speculate on what has happened down there and at all AFL clubs this year vis-a-vis injuries

However knowing the people down there I would be very surprised if a very thorough TAGHLAO wasn't undertaken by the training services department of the AFC.....

I know I shouldn't say this BUT.....,

Burtons, Hentschells, Bassets, Rucittio's conditions can't be blamed on Telstra Doom.....
