AFL Statistics

Talk on the national game

The crows have once again used the least amount of players in the AFL this year, with 28

Interestingly, port are second least on 29

Geelong have used the equal most in the league (with Carlton) with 36 players.

Sometimes its hard to know what those numbers mean. I dont think Geelong have had too many injuries, but they have probably struggled to work out who are their 18-22nd best players.

Conversely, I think the crows should have picked a couple more players. People like otten and hampton (before he got injured) should have been dropped a week or two earlier than they were.

GWS have only won 34/56 quarters this year, but that is good enough for top spot!

Crows and Port lead on 37

Geelong has only won 29, and Richmond, currently sitting in the top four, has only won 27/56. So less than 50%

Shows how inconsistent those two teams have been (though geelong was more early season than recently)

Think in Geelong's case it holds them in better stead if injuries or suspension hits come finals time.

yeah for sure. thats why I am worried about the crows not blooding a few more when given the chance. Players like wigg should have had a couple of games by now, because he will be thrown into the fire if Smith or Laird get injured

Currently the longest injury list atm with 15.

Ommissions due to form have been rare this year for us. Most changes have easily been because of injuries. I dont think we had 3 debutants last week because of others form.

No, Id have Scott Selwood, Daniel Menzel, Cockatoo, Parfitt, Henderson, Stewart and maybe even Smith and Ruggles in our side. Some would argue Lang and McCarthy would be close too but Ill concede them as fringe. And thats only the last weeks injuries!
If Geelong had struggled to work out who their best 18-22 are there would be a heap of ommissions every week but there never has been, most changes hve been by necessity such as the three youngsters coming in on Saturday.
The only thing I would concede was we seemed unsure early on who our best ruckman was and there was an ommission inolved there from memory.
The fact that Motlop gets a game every week shows how desperate we have been with injuries.

Selwood played a fair amount in the twos right? and Menzel and Stewart only missed on the weekend (though he is out for a while)

J Selwood and Menzel would be the only players you mentioned in the top dozen at the club. So I don't think it's really hurt them that much

As I said that was only the last week. And Scott Selwood is easily in our top 12, he had to play a few in the twos to get match fit after a long lay off. Hes a big barometer of how we go.

At the end of the day we have had 6 players who have played every game including Dangerfield who played through about 3 weeks injured and Motlop who wouldnt get a game if we had our best 21 available.

6 is a really low amount. I would think the crows would be up around 15

certainly not the worst player going around, but he would be well down the pecking order in terms of best defenders in the game

The draw difficulty in 2017 is bullshit. Facts are anyteam can beat any other team on any given day and I think it's fantastic. If anyone complains on the season we've had so far you must be a female that nothing's ever good enough or just dead set hard to please. Or both ;)

Is 1 the easiest and 18th the hardest?
1961, 1971, 1976, 1978, 1983, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1991, 2008, 2013, 2014, 2015.... And don't you forget it!

1 is hardest

I thought it was interesting for the easiness of the dogs and richmond's draw.

(crows being hardest isnt surprising given they play port, geelong and melbourne twice)

I to agree with carey though - this year is the most even in my memory

Good stats mate, when did Geelong leave the comp and Gold Coast enter two teams? I missed that!
