It's about time Kenny makes a statement at selection, not just on 5AA

Precisely.

The same sh*t will happen though. You can bet our omissions will come from Neade, Amon, Toumpas, Ah Chee, S.Gray.

Here is your chance to make a big statement, Ken. Put the playing group on notice and drop an Ebert, Hartlett, or go the extreme and drop the skipper (mind you i'm convinced he is playing injured anyway).

There are 3 players who are untouchable at this point: R.Gray, Pittard and Hombsch.

To soon to drop Dixon?

Dixon is the interesting argument.

On form, absolutely, however;

A) If we were to drop our key forward, and "missing piece", that would just bring about more negative media.
B) I don't believe the problem is entirely Charlie's. I am not impressed by his lack of workrate and defensive pressure (fitness is a big issue here i think), but there is no pressure coming from our entire forward 6 or midfield group, something i'll analyse in greater detail in my review.

This was also a criticism of Mark Williams too, that he had his favourites.

Indeed it was, and it was cancerous right throughout the Primus era, too.

Port Adelaide 2016

Postby bennymacca » Tue Apr 19, 2016 12:15 pm

Is it just a lack of depth?

To me it doesn't seem like a lot of your young lads haven't come on as expected, the only one making real strides is Sam gray.

Carlile is injured and won't be available for selection for another 4 weeks.

Clurey will return through the Magpies this weekend, and it won't be long before he is in the seniors, IMO. You could probably throw Krak in that boat, too, once his club imposed ban is up. Aside from Pittard we lack precision coming out of defence.

Howard must play against the Cats. Playing both Howard and Butch would leave us too tall, IMO.

Any chance Dixon can be used through the ruck? Maybe better value having him rotate through and leave Westhoff forward.

Having Dixon in the ruck would be like having one less midfielder at the stoppage...the way the rucks have to be now they need to chase and tackle, not sure Dixon would do that after the bounce.

Its a fair call. Issue compounded by the fact we have traded away our first pick in the last 2 drafts (we still got a first rounder in the Polec deal).

Sam is starting to get on my nerves too. Can win a truckload of the footy (last weekend the exception), but is a culprit of the "kick and hope", which is a killer when you are structuring a press around maintaining possession.

We didn't have a Maggies game last weekend, but against the roosters we had Snelling pick up 24 touches and 2 goals, Howard collect 11 touches and 2 goals, O'Shea with 20 touches, Mitchell with 26 touches and Colquhoun with 30.

There is a little bit of pressure from down below but as you said, not much youth development.

It won't happen, but I would like to see us drop Lobbe and bring in Howard as first ruck and run a Howard/Westhoff/Trengove ruck combination.

If we were to drop Lobbe, I would be selecting Butcher.

I'm only using the crows as an example as I know more about their players in the seconds, but I reckon there is at least half a dozen playing in our SANFL that would pretty comfortably be in ports team right now.

To me that says there is a lack of talent at the bottom end.

Probably a fair assessment.

I think the problem is that Port don't have enough Mids who want to play a defensive midfield role.
Ebert is probably the only one that actually does do it most often and I think Wines is better when he plays that role, but the rest of the Mids think they are goal kickers. And at times, Ebert and Wines looked confused when they try play heavy attacking football.
When your midfield runs with Boak,Hartlett,Ebert,Gray, with rotating Polec,AhChee,Toupas,Wingard and Neade, there is not a lot of defensively minded mid fielders in that lot.
Look at Hawks. Lewis,Hodge, Shiels and Mitchell play that defensive midfield role a lot of the time and there outside runners do a bulk of the damage after these blokes get that defensive contested footy. They very rarely ever play in the centre square at the same time.
It's about having that balance. With your Rover,RR,Centre and 2 wingman, 2-3 of them need to be defensively based players. They will bring the flankers into the game and hopefully nullify the opposition at the same time.
