You know that trading isn't the only way clubs improve, right? Trades can be great, but you don't just go around sending blokes and picks to clubs just to satisfy those who want to see action. If Adelaide wasn't able to get any players at a price that made us a winner in that trade, then so be it. Sometimes the best decision a list manager can make is to say no.
Keep spinning it.
Invoking the spirit of Donald Trump?
At the end of the day, all the huffing & puffing from West Lakes pre draft about bolstering their midfield, was just that. In fact you went the other way & traded a mid out. Adelaide believes their premiership window is open now which means you improve your current list, now. Copping shit for paying overs for a player who you've clearly identified & could help you take the next step is irrelevant. Have a look at the teams currently ahead and those who have gone passed the Crows (Haw, Syd, Geel, WB, GWS, WC) all have been active this draft period.
Whilst the ultra conservative Crows have sat on their hands at times, other clubs are constantly on the front foot & have traded out stars (Hawks) been willing to pay overs to land the big fish (WB) whilst paying part of the traded players wage, generally making things happen which has brought success to these clubs.
If being a winner & making a stance at the trade table here & now jeopardises success in the next couple of years, more fool you. The Crows wanted Gibbs, he wanted to come, Adelaide in the end wouldn't take a risk to reap a possible reward. Was that the best decision?
