Not sure that is the case Jim. 3 quarters of your salary cap is tied up for the next 5 years over paying Hurley, Hooker, Heppell and who else looked like leaving. You will also need cap space over the next few years to pay Merrett and the likes when they come out of contract.

Not true
We will have plenty in the tank.
Goddard's heavily back ended contract is now over and he will be on only close to a third of this years wage. If/when Hibberd leaves that will free up $350k and Cooney was on close to $400k.
Heppell didn't negotiate a new contract so his wage won't go up. Yes we paid overs for Hurley but that doesn't kick in until the end of next year. Hooker signed on decent money but not overs. All the others signed 1 or 2 year contracts on either minimum or moderate pay. Most of the kids have re-signed already so it's probably only Laverde and Jobe that will cost us a bit.

5 years at about $750k would be overs IMO for Hooker. When blokes like Hurley extend their contract, they rip up the current one and renegotiate the last year as part of their new contract, so his massive salary starts next season.
Hibbard/Cooney helps a bit but i don't think you will be able to bring in too much 'top end talent' over the next few years at the risk of losing some good young players. I don't think you have as much cap space as you think.

Saving about $500k off Goddard too. The club has put aside quite a fair bit to try a land some decent talent as they know they may have to pay overs. The club had a short list of about a dozen players that they would chase hard in the hope of landing one and have the required money. At a recent function the CEO was quite open and said the Hooker deal was closer to $650k than $750k.
Havnt allowed for the new cap which is about to go up by a predicted $1m a season either.

Off the top of my head we only have 3 SA lads I think. Fantasia and Francis come out of contract at end of next year but I believe both are in the process of extending their contracts and Redman only recently signed a 3 year extension

I don't mind Vickery, he us a very good set shot so that's a tick. Reckon he can be qlot more consistent in our system with better defined roles. Clarko and I are often on the same page ;)

Speak for yourself Daisy- I cannot see any value in Vickery whatsoever.

Is it just me or are all these 'deals' etc coming out just a bit too early? Stupid bye week.

Jason was meant to be one of the great backmen, then Cameron a dominating ruckmen. Travis did for a while become the best key forward in the game, but wow it was short lived and I imagine if Eddie today went back to that day and told himself what would happen young Eddie would laugh at old Eddie.

Where do your memories come from? Where did you see this at the time?
I remember the club anticipating that Cameron and Jason could be quality footballers, not necessarily champions. Sadly, they didn't live up to that - Jason had a reasonable career, but certainly not what anyone would have hoped.
As for Travis, the past few years haven't been great (and this year was terrible) but he's an All Australian, won a club b&f, our goalkicking four times and was a formidable player in our grand final runs, including our tilt at the 2007 grand final.
He hasn't had the career finish that I'd have hoped, but he's been a champion for our club. I don't think Eddie would regret that.

Who said regret? I just said they didn't end up having the careers Collingwood thought they would when they drafted them. One by one you've agreed with me, so I'm not sure why you start off trying to disagree.

I remember when Jason was playing for Collingwood I thought he was a spud and my old man said they only drafted him and Cameron to get the youngest brother Travis.

Sen Tape was delisted by the Gold Coast today. Would be a chance of getting a rookie spot you would think.

Travis was 13 when Jason was drafted. He might have had talent at that age, but no way do you really know if he'll make it in the AFL. Let alone if he's going to be physically dominant like Travis grew up to be.

Fair enough but it's what my old man said David told Collingwood if you want Travis you have to draft Jason & Cameron.

There's plenty that work in AFL circles believe that Travis was always hoped/expected to be the best of the lot, and the main target was always Travis. That's not to say Collingwood didn't have hopes for Jason and Cameron.

Im guessing they are looking for a Hale type who can ruck and go forward, they have missed that type in last couple of years, knowing Richmond he will probably end up a star!

It's an old wives tale though. He just wasn't that much of a standout at that point. His currency is his size and marking. He wasn't 196cm and pushing grown men over at 13. There's just no possible way Collingwood would have even known if Travis was going to be an AFL player or an amateur player at that age. If you talk to someone in youth development or coaching the standout kids of that age, sometimes the best kids at that age who you think are certainties get nowhere near it and the kids who end up being the best are the ones you never even considered.

Absolutely, people probably only have to look at their own school or junior club footy to find those kids that were massive and dominated u13's, that were no bigger or better in a few years time

I reckon similar(ish) stories went around about the Westoffs (for eg.) that the younger brothers would better than the one before

That's an interesting one - probably been given his best run at it this season, and has had his best season off the back of it

Surprising if true, especially the timing.

He turned down offers to stay at the end of last year didn't he?

Thought they guys he's now keeping out of the side every week; CEY, Knight, Grigg etc would be the ones wanting opportunities elsewhere.
