Talk on the national game

Taking a contrary stand but I reakon the AFL has got to stand by the rules of the game.

They are there in black and white.

Unfortunate for Freo but them's the rules.

Result should stand, it's when the umpire says that it's over, not the players.

We have had sirens, bells, whistles and umpires for 100 years, the rules clearly state that the game concludes when the umpires hear the siren and raises both arms in the air.

My mate owns his own TAB, he told me last night that they received a fax from the AFL half hour after the game advising the result will stand

Their will be an investigation but it will concentrate on the root cause,
1. why the siren was not up to appropriate standards, and
2. why the time keeper did not keep blowing the siren until the umprires had heard the thing

Unfortunately for freo the result will stand

Bingo. That's where the investigation starts & ends.

Aussies Rules has always had this curious need to not know how much time is remaining. I've never understood it myself as most other sports play to the clock. I prefer to know how long there is to go, I'm sure the players would, and the umpires as well. If the umpires were expecting the siren, they would have heard it. Get rid of this stupidity of not knowing when the siren is going to sound. On occasion, I've been concentrating so hard at work that I haven't heard my own phone ring, so I can imagine how umpires could miss the siren in a frenetic situation.

Have to disagree re: clock.

Nothing more exciting than being in the crowd when it ticks over to 30 minutes and there's less than a kick in it.

Is there enough time to snag another goal? Can we hang on? Blow the bloody siren!

Just another little quirk - along with the bounce, behinds and so on - that makes our great game different to every other game in the world.

Yep I'm with MP and the Dog from Sydney ... Wasn't an issue (needing to know how much time remains) for the last 30+ years, why should it be now?

Actually, this has been an ongoing issue for many years, and discussed many times by various football panels around the country. It just seems silly to me that the coaching box knows exactly how much time to go, but the players don't, so the box is spending the last 60 seconds or so in a frenzy rushing messages out around the ground, informing the players. And whilst walking away from games, the number of times I've heard people saying, "If xxxxx had known there were only seconds remaining he would have moved the ball quicker into attack and given us a chance to win".

It's not an issue for me, I don't care either way. All I'm saying is if the umpires are somehow aware of exactly how much time is remaining, they will expect to hear the siren, giving them less chance of missing it, as what happened on the weekend.

And more drama.......

Another interesting thing to come out of the farce.

IT COULD HAVE BEEN WORSE FOR FREMANTLE !!!!!!!!!

One of the 3 umpires made the decision to pay a 50
metre penalty because Fremantle players were swearing
at him.
This was over ruled by the other umpire/umpires.
Imagine if St.Kilda had won the game that way.

Also if the St. Kilda captain had asked for a player count
it may have showed too many Fremantle players on the field as well.

As a Saints supporter I reckon Fremantle have been robbed!

The other thing that will come out of the investigation is why was the Freo coach and CEO on the ground before the game was signalled as completed, the tv vision shows Hayes going off at Connolly, tell him to get the f#@k of the ground

a tv report just mentioned that the afl commission will rule on the result of the game this wednesday.

it has also been discovered that even though the siren was not heard it went off 8 seconds earlier, the time clock dropped from 2.35 sec to 2.27 seconds,

I have a feeling that Adrian Anderson will rule in favor of Freo and change the result

I can't see the AFL changing the result- it would make them look more stupid (funnily enough, that's actually possible!). They are buying time, so they can come up with some carp, which will exonerate them, but probably blame the poor mug-football spectator.

Anyone else see AA walk out on his press conference last night? Yep, thats the kinda guy we want in charge of things, someone who walks when things get too hot in the kitchen .. Me think Jeff Jansz (sp??) would do a better job anyway!!
