It was a good win by the Saints, Kosi back was a plus, concern would be that finals you need all your big guns on board and no Hamil, Hayes and the Goose makes it tough for the Saints

Didn't Geelong beat St Kilda earlier this year?
Winning 1 in a row hardly constitutes a bitchee?

REB's sore loser reply

1. 8-5 this decade and 1-1 this year, but by St Kilda's standards, you are right.
2. Last time I looked you won the premiership against the top sides, not middle of the road times but hey go ahead and dream. You'll be back on the Cow bandwagon in late September.
3. The spirit of 63 disappeared in round 10 against West Coast. We've been playing catch up ever since.
4. Neither of us will make the Granny, we just got our disappointment out the way first.

REB

I would like your views on couple observations from this game.

First, given thatthe saints had a very inexperience CHB, why did Bomber start Mooney as a loose man in defence, my view this is poor coaching, any opposition coach would love to see Mooney start in defence, especially in a must win game. Also King starts on the bench at the beginning of the 3rd and 4th 1/4's when the game is to be won and leadership is required

This leads me to me second point, the Clubs leadership

1. Hunt pulls out of a mark
2. Mooney passes of from 40m out instead of going back and kicking the goal
3. Ottens has a shot from 35m out and doesn't make the difference

In games senior players need to set the example and take the responsibility to deliver under pressure, my view is these examples are outputs of a lack of leadership at the club......

There has been a lot of talk regarding the fitness coach and player infighting, Bomber has one more year, I am not convinced he is the man, he has been their for 7 years, his win / loss ratio is below 50% and the club lacks discipline, leadership and they were not prepared for a season of AFL footy.....

Is the club in better shape now then two years ago, some big decision needs to be made in regards to the Coach, Captain, Leadership Group and the list

******* Geelong

Postby Rik E Boy » Thu Aug 17, 2006 8:41 am

Syd,

1. Hunt is carp and I've never rated him. He's played maybe six good games this years tops but they won't put him the magoos.
2. Confidence. Mooney would be second guessing everything he does on the field at the moment because he has an unhappy knack of getting suspended for doing silly things. Mooney is in a similar position to Byron Pickett a year ago so Cam can come back strongly once he gets himself right mentally.
3. Ottens is normally a very good kick but has been terrible lately which is a shame because he is excellent in a contested marking situation.

Leadership: Paul Chapman must be appointed captain next season instead of Steven King who just does not inspire.

Player infighting: Says the media. Any team who is not winning aren't all smiles but a lot of the Geelong stories are pure bulltish.

Coaching: Bomber Thompson and Andy Lovell should both go. A whisper about the place is that Cresswell might be lured back to Catland as the head coach as he is well regarded by the players. Bomber lost the players when Loris was sacked because naturally any player would have trust in the man who prepares them and it was perceived by many players that Bomber had a key role in Loris' sacking (cripes don't ask me to spell his last name LOL).

Club position: The club is not in a worse position than it was two years ago. Geelong still has one of the youngest lists in the comp and there is plenty of improvement in some of the 50-100 gamers who have had poor seasons this year. As for Geelong being not prepared for the season that is absolute crap. They came out and won their first six matches and then we got a run of injuries early doors that set us back. The confidence fell away and we were destined to miss the finals after we coughed up that huge lead against the West Coast (remember, we were 3-7 at this point). We fought hard to be a part of the eight but have come up short. For anyone wishing to state that the Cats 'window' is closed, have a look at Collingwood this season. This time last year they were bottom three and looked headed for a lengthy stint in the wilderness. So I would say that Geelong is in the same position as two years ago, a young team that won't hit it's peak for a couple of seasons.

The List: Riccardi will retire and Koulouritis, Lonergan and Sam Hunt may be delisted. I believe a trade may be on the cards for Steve Johnson. In my more emotional moments this season I've called for many heads to roll but I don't think Mackie, Kelly or Kingsley will leave the club next season. Kingsley has been bloody awful this year but has been a 50 goals a season man on three occasions and deserves a chance for redemption.

Bomber said after Geelong lost to Carlton at Optus in 2004 said that he might not be the one to guide this group to the ultimate destination and it appears that this has come to pass. Bomber will walk I believe, look for him to be a lot more relaxed and maybe a few upset Catter wins...now that its all over.

regards,

REB

One of the not-so-great mysteries of football,as Port showed last week, when the season is over the team's tend to take risk's,run, give the youngster's a chance to shine,it happens every year when bottom 8 clubs upset the apple cart of finals bound units.Infuriating for the fans.Just ask me,or REB.

I couldn't agree more with you here REB. Mooney is an absolute gun and could dominate the comp. I think that he needs to re-invent himself as more of a Barry Hall type player. IMHO I think he could be better than Barry Hall, he is much more mobile and athletic.

I also wouldn't write Geelong off completely yet. They have a good group of youngish players, as you said.

Mooney, Ling, Bartel, Harley, Scarlett, Enright, Corey, Ablett, Ottens and Chapman and maybe a couple more that I have forgotten are all top-class players that are just 1 or 2 years off or in their prime. I think big changes need to occur in the footy department down at the Cattery - and once these take effect (hopefully) Geelong will bounce back.
