The AFL want the NT for the Gold Coast

Would love to see the NT get a team but it's not going to be possible to be financially viable.

I think one day it will happen but at present the AFL are propping up GWS, GC and then possibly a Tassie team in the early days so not sure they will want another club that isn't going to be viable on their two feet.

Problem will be is that it's hard to see GWS and GC ever being financially viable.

Having a look at the key findings page was interesting:

-Essentially under the traditional model they would expect the club to lose $15mil a year.

-Only consideration to losing that level of money would be if they believed there would be signifcant social impact and community value to an AFL team in the region.

-Can almost put a pin in an NT team with the recommend option being a Northern Australian team that could be based in Darwin but play out of Darwin, Alice, Cairns and Townsville

Play some home games at Alice Springs each season. The NT footy fans would then have a genuine team to support in the comp rather than hosting fly in fly out games once a year.

Do you really want to give the NRL that much of a leg up, up here by relocating the Suns?

Gold Coast doesn't like them, China doesn't like them, Darwin apart from some family members doesn't like them.

On June 2nd Adelaide fans will outnumber Suns fans by at least 5:1

The team will join the competition in 2027 and play at Bellerive Oval in Hobart and York Park in Launceston.

If they join in 2027, you'd think they play in the 2026 VFL competition, so that means the 2025 draft will be their first talent grab.

2 more drafts ( 2023 and 2024 ) for North, West Coast and Hawthorn to bring players in before compromised drafts.

Does that really give the NRL a leg up? Or more to the point, should that be a factor in the AFL's decision making?

FWIW I think there's no chance the AFL relocate the Suns.

Tasmania is very politically competitive, but in the three northern/central Tassie electorates, not in the two in the Hobart area, so I'm not sure there is that much of an electoral incentive to pour money into a Hobart stadium.

I think they will be able to draft 17 year olds in the year prior like GWS did.

They started in 2012, in 2011 the club was allowed to sign up to twelve 17-year-olds born between 1 January and 30 April 1993.

At least for these 3 clubs they will have been going to the draft well for 4+ years before drafts are compromised. Its other clubs like my mob Richmond & GWS that look like the drop off could be coming & if it does that trouble could come in those years.
