Walker is Captain. They didn't take it off of him during the pre season. The vote is a formality. Not sure what the big deal is.

Most clubs have a players vote to see who's captain.
With the player turnover so high (avg 6-8 per year?), you're asking these new people to vote on a leader they know nothing about.
No doubt the existing leadership group from the previous year will lead the preseason until a new vote is made.

Voting by players is a falacy....the leadership group is determined by the coaches.

If its that simple, announce it in November and let him lead the team during the pre-season.

Huh? I think you'll find many of the clubs have the players vote on the leadership group, the coaches decide the captain.

VETERAN Brendon Goddard has chosen not to be part of Essendon's leadership group this season despite being voted in by his peers.

Orazio Fantasia and David Myers have joined captain Dyson Heppell, Zach Merrett, Cale Hooker, Joe Daniher and Michael Hurley in the seven-man group.

Jobe Watson was the other change after he retired at the end of last season.

Goddard, 32, has lined up in 312 games since he was drafted at No.1 in 2002 and finished second in last year's best and fairest behind Daniher.

Heppell told reporters in Tullamarine on Saturday Goddard would still be a huge presence.

"We discussed it a couple of weeks ago and he announced that he would love to do that. That's a very selfless act in itself. (It) showed great leadership from 'BJ' (Goddard), allowing someone else to come in," Heppell said.

Scott Pendlebury believes leadership from the entire playing group will drive the club’s 2018 campaign, after being elected captain for a fifth season alongside vice-captain Steele Sidebottom.

A peer vote based on the group’s values and behaviours saw the midfield duo unanimously selected by their teammates during the club’s pre-season camp on the Gold Coast.

They’ll have the support of a wider leadership group featuring Taylor Adams, Jeremy Howe and Lynden Dunn.

Naivety... if the players voted Harley Bennell into Freo's leadership group the coaches would allow it?

As Goddard has proved above, the vote it not the final say on the matter.

The players wouldn't vote in a guy like Bennell though.

naturally the coaching staff would not allow it. I'm not sure how many cases where a player group have voted in a captain and the coaching group overturned it.

Well they wouldn't vote a guy like that in, be realistic. It's a moot point.

Goddard chose not to, it wasn't the coaches who denied the vote of the playing group.

Basically you're wrong, most clubs have the players vote the leadership group in.

JACK Ziebell has been reappointed as North Melbourne captain for the second straight season as the Roos announced a relatively unchanged leadership group for 2018.

The 26-year-old took over from Andrew Swallow ahead of the 2017 season and will continue in the role after a players’ vote.

They vote yes, I'm not arguing that, but if you think the players vote is final then you are mistaken.

Forward Ben Brown – who starred with 63 goals last year – was overlooked in a vote of North's players, although Ziebell flagged a future leadership role for the Tasmanian.

To say it is soley the players vote is a falacy, however clubs like to promote it that way in the media etc.

They are not going to come out and say player X was voted into the leadership group but has not been endorsed by the club.

Gotta remember Booney comes from probably the only club where the coach didnt get his choice as captain. Look how that worked out for them, 5 or so years in the wilderness and nearly killed the club off.
Thanks for Shaun Booney :D

Nearly, but it didn't and we're a stronger club for it.

Wasn't that long ago you were going to merge with Melbourne, sometimes things are good, sometimes things are tough.

I think Rory should be captain as tex didn’t even play the second half of last season.
