On another point, it was the first time for 3 years we have driven to Melbourne and the roads are fantastic now on both sides of the border, got there comfortably in 8 hours with a half hour break, Im sure years back it used to take 9-10 hours, more dual highway and overtaking lanes.

Pretty poop 100km/h zone for a large portion of the journey though I thought.

It once took me 12 hours from Melbourne to Adelaide, but I was driving a Mini Moke at the time...
I'd drive next time I go there as I'll want to visit old friends in the Dandenong Ranges, and the petrol becomes insignificant compared to car hire charges.

I did drive an Audi A3 Turbo cabriolet in the UK for a few days in 2011, from London to Penzance and back.
That was only because it was the only car the Avis dealer in Kensington had left on a Thursday and hard to rent because it was a manual.
So, after I'd said "No thanks!" at the normal price they gave it to me for the price of a VW Polo.
