Either our first rounder or the one we receive from North for Polec (should the deal happen), I believe could possibly be traded to the Crows for Milera...

I know the club has always rated him & if Polec goes, they see him as a possible replacement

Correct, most learned industry people seem to think we've got as much space to play with as anyone.

Surely they are close to the cap with all the extra pieces of the puzzle they have got in recent years plus Ollie signing on long term?

Wouldn't think so, weren't Port looking to offer Polec around 500k a year? I think they've probably got more room than people realise.

And they’re chasing Lycett?
They’ll need more $$ for Wingard, Jonas, Clurey in the next year or so.
Can’t see where it will come from?
Boak will by gone end of next year which will free up cash but who else?

The $800k for Shiel wouldn't be a concern.

Boak, Gray and Ryder all out of contract at the end of next year, Westhoff out of contract this year all of them 30 or over, none of them on the coin they'd be on now going forward.

The recruits that came in this year are not on huge money ( thankfully! ).

Then why the hell wouldn’t you pay one of your most important players what he’s worth on the open market?
Have they finally learnt with offering 5 year deals and that’s why they won’t go to 5 years with Polec?

Who’s the highest paid players at Port?
At a guess:
Robbie Gray
Boak
Ryder
Dixon
Wines

Daylight
Then:
Wingard
Rockliff
Ebert
?

Didn't the AFL have veteran concessions for players over 30 where percentages are excluded from the cap? Wouldn't these guys fit into that category which would free up more space as well?

Probably, can't remember - my memory of it is a bit vague, just recall there was some concession in place?

*edit* google turned this up:

VETERANS’ RULES

Veterans’ Allowance

The previous Veterans’ List allowance has been replaced with clubs now granted a salary cap allowance for players with 10 completed years or more with the club.

There is no longer an age requirement of 30 years.

The amount of the allowance has been calculated as a fixed percentage of Total Player Payments (TPP) per player based on the average amount of football payments excluded from the TPP for players on the Veterans’ List for seasons 2007-09, divided by the average number of players with 10 or more years’ service at one club during that period.

The fixed percentage has been set at 1.229 per cent and the allowance per player in 2013 is $112,320.

Only offering Polec 3 mate, not 4 let alone 5 and we'd know more about his foot than anyone at the moment.

"What he's worth on the open market" is what we're offering him, the fact North haven't been able to attract anyone and are willing to pay way overs shouldn't be considered by Port Adelaide when deciding what he's worth.

He's had one 6 game patch in 2017 of top level form and 15 or so games this year. Nothing more.

The Saints by the sounds of it think he’s worth more as well.
If Gaff is likely to get around $1m a year, Polec must be around $700k.

But I guess it’s the length of contract that is the sticking point.

Paying Polec $700k doesn't mean that's what he's worth though. It means that's what they have to pay to get him to move. Two different things and I think we've got this one right, we're not paying overs to keep him.
