Interesting article by roo.

It does get the question why he is retiring.
Surely he could wait for next years intake?

they only have an intake every 2 or 3 years, kane wont be playing footy then so he really had no choice. Im sure he and kenny had this discussion but kenny took the risk knowing full well he may lose kane mid year. Hats of to kane I say, life is bigger than footy. Roos article is a joke.

So he would have known all of that before signing a 1 year contract extension at the end of last year. Why didn't he retire then?

Even if the intake was another year or two away I'm sure someone like him could find a job in a second - I thought he was pretty good on radio for instance.

I think it is pretty selfish of him tbh (assuming he is still fit to play, which he looks like he is)

It looks like he just hung around to get 300 games.

Yeah, pretty dumb to wait until you get an AFL life membership.

I didn't say it was dumb, I said waiting around for that sole purpose was selfish.

And he would have already had afl life membership as they count pre season games.

I'm not in his shoes so I have no real opinion on the matter, his best football is behind him but I still think some of his shut down work this season has been exceptional, the number he did on Mitchell was brilliant.
To his defence, at least he has retired still having something to offer and not being like a lot of players that play an extra season or two for the sake of it, he's never been one of my favourite players and I've been very critical of his disposal and heart at times but he's been an honest performer with some great accolades along the way.

Ken Hinkley knew Kane was going for the firies. He was his reference. Kane was not selfish. The club knew the whole time what was going on and encouraged him. If the club thought it was a problem they would have got rid of him at the end of last year. All of this was explained in the press conference he held this morning.

AFL footballers commit to being selfless. ( With ample monetary reward, mind you )

They train their balls off, they put their "head in the hole" where angels fear to tread, the consign themselves to (semi) sheltered lives for risk of encountering a **** head in the street/pub/holiday park, where ever.....one acts in his and his families best interests and look out.

Like I said above, it doesn't sit well with me and it wouldn't with his team mates, I assume, but he's made this decision and I've got the up most respect for the bloke on and off field.

Why was it not said at the time when he signed that he was only ever playing half a season?

Just seems a little odd to me given I think he is clearly still in ports best 22 and his body is good. It's different than Cassisi who was clearly shot.

That's arguable, his best and worst games are poles apart.

Fair point. But if he is managed throughout the season I have no doubt port coaches and supporters would rather him in the side than out of it.

What are the odds of actually being accepted into the SAMFS?

I've heard conflicting reports of 1100-5000 people applying & up to as little as half a dozen actually making it. This only happens every 3-4 years. Do the maths & see that this is truly a unique situation.

Also is anyone actually reading the press statement where Hinkley said he "insisted" that Cornes stay on til his 300th? It sounds like Cornes was more than willing to sit out as a result of his position.

Sound like what Kane Cornes is then!
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Why wouldn't he be able to finish the season while doing his studies?
How does the training work? Obviously, with the police force you spend some time at the academy. Is there a similar set-up with the firies?
Could the SAMFS and PAFC not come to an agreement regarding his training/commitments for both organisations that allowed him to finish the season?

Is being an AFL footballer a full time job? Yes.

Do you think he needs to do the physical aspect of MFS training? No.
