It's not a matter of showing their support for him. It's his turn on the roster this year

Exactly, Hird had a distinguished playing career and has earn't the right to present that medal. His indiscretions are well documented but his punishment has been served, his mental battles are far worse than a few boo's, its time to move on by all and leave this stain behind. What better way than this IMO to acknowledge his footballing achievements and contribution to the game.

Im just not sure putting him up in front of 100k people is the best first public step back for him. A couple of years time after getting back into the media and being a public face via that would be different IMO>

AFL executives Simon Lethlean and Richard Simkiss have been forced to resign following accusations of misconduct.
The pair stood down in the wake of allegations two senior AFL managers had affairs with younger female employees.
Earlier in the week the Herald Sun reported AFL insiders were concerned with how women were being treated at the organisation, prompting whistleblowers to bring the controversial relationships into the public sphere.
Lethlean was General Manager of Football Operations and Simkiss was General Manager of Commercial.
AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan addressed the media on Friday afternoon and said he was “disappointed” in what had transpired but thinks their decision to resign is “the right one”.
“Two men had inappropriate relationships with two younger women who work in the AFL industry,” McLachlan said.
“The AFL that I want to lead is a professional organisation based on integrity.
“I expect my managers to be role models and set a standard for the rest of the organisation. They are held to a higher standard.
“I want a diverse and inclusive culture where employees are treated respectfully and fairly at all levels.

“It must be backed up with action and change.”
McLachlan said numerous parties are involved in this situation and asked the media to respect their privacy.
He said the resignations were based on separate matters of a “professional and personal” nature, but he was only dealing with the professional component.
Lethlean was newly promoted and had only been in his role for a few months.
More to come ...

What does it matter if they had affairs with younger women so long as it was consensual?

Of course not.
Must be more to it as the females haven't been named. You don't get sacked just for having an affair

So is it one woman between the both of them?

I'm guessing the resignation is necessary because of "inside her trading" ;) ;)

At least 50% of the reason I don't really follow the AFL anymore is that the media coverage is cringe-worthy garbage most of the time.

I prefer to watch Footy on the TV with the mute on......if I watch it at all and that boils down to the poor standard of commentary

In asking for a bit of responsibility and correct reporting?
Judging by the feedback I've received all of my working life, he's only asking for what the public expects.
