Alex Keath is nearly 27, has played 30 games as the loose man in defence who doesn't have to pick anyone up and he's worth a 2nd rounder or better?

Also requires surgery on his leg, which will further de-value him. 2nd rounder at best, 3rd rounder more likely.

They've been taking kids for 4 years via the draft and trades, they've delisted dead wood over 28 and need some experience on the list.

With 5 young indigenous players on the list maybe more after this draft/trade, the experience of Betts, the guidance he can offer and the on field draw card is exactly what Carlton need. Imagine he snaffles a GOTY contender early in the year and Carlton are 3-1 after the first month, imagine the hype around them?

I agree. If we threw the kitchen sink at him to get him, then I'd be worried. But for pick 80 odd, why not! Especially with Adelaide paying some of his salary too. Win win IMO.

I don't get why Adelaide would have to pay some of his salary. If he's wanting to leave & Carlton want him the he should either take a pay cut or Carlton match his current pay. If not then I'd keep him. Same with Jenkins.

You are never keeping a bloke who doesn't want to be there, particularly if the rumors as to why he wants to leave are true ( the Collective Minds Camp ) and you'd think Adelaide have got a bit to thank Betts for.

Jenkins is the interesting one, might be as simple as Daniher out > Jenkins in at Essendon and if not....he might have to stay.

I hope the Crows keep him. I'm sick of contracted players 'nominating' their preferred destination.

Then like I said, he takes a cut or Carlton match the current salary.

If Carlton don't match the salary you're stuck with a 33 year old who doesn't want to play for you on $600k per year.

If you don't pay some of his wage, see above.

So be it. I reckon he would still want to play to his best ability rather than plod around in the SANFL e.g. Bryce Gibbs wanting out of Carlton .

Agreed. I wonder how long it will be until the Clubs gets some say in it and can trade players without their approval. Unlikely it will be anytime soon. Mind you I think you should only be allowed to trade players without approval to clubs in the same state so there isn’t an issue with relocation costs etc. Players have all the power and I’m sure the clubs are getting sick of it.

The AFLPA hold all the aces now, they won't ever let that happen.

I remember Port being tough with Nick Stevens & Carlton saying he's going to cost them the number 1 pick. Everyone said Port were crazy not getting at least a 2nd rounder for him & would be hurting their chances of success. The 2004 flag suggests otherwise.

from the Age

Carlton players will welcome back Eddie Betts with “open arms” when the former star returns to Ikon Park in a bargain trade this month.

Adelaide will pay a chunk of Betts’ salary to line up for the Blues next season and the mercurial goalsneak needs to play just 16 more games to notch 200 for the club that drafted him in 2004.

Sounds like the Kelly deal is done in principle.
Cats to get 14,24 and a future first rounder.
Eagles get Kelly and possibly some later pick swaps

It’s all good, false alarm.
Sounds like the media was caught out guessing again.
Cox is not leaving Collingwood :)
