At the end of the day, if NM cannot entice a player by offering them 1.5m per year for 7 years, they never will.

First I've heard of his manager saying that.
They've only offered one player $1.5m - pretty tough to pry someone away from a side that's probably going to play in a GF.
Imagine what people would've said if they didn't try?

Be interesting to see what we do now, do we go after some mid rangers like Lever and Stringer? Or set ourselves up for another big crack at some free agents at end of 2018 (Sloane, Gawn, McGovern, Lynch)....probably have the war chest to do both.

I suspect we will go to the draft this year, get some more kids in and then go big again in 12 months time.

Probably better off looking at the draft year and going hard at a fee next year.

The asking price from Adelaide for Lever rules him out as a mid pricer, I think Stringer you could get much cheaper.

If you can get Stringers head right, he will be a bargain.
Lever won't go to NM.
Sloane will be 29 come the start of 2019 season, not sure that's an ideal strategy for NM.
I'd go after Lynch for sure. Him with BBB in the forward line would be an awesome tandem.

Wonder if Bullies would like Goldy? Straight swap for Stringer, wouldn't hurt our cap as we are paying Goldy good $'s and wouldn't need to give away a good pick.

Free agents go to destination clubs that look to be in the premiership window. Free agents have shown in recent years big coin in bottom 4 clubs holds no attraction to them. What makes you think North's bid at some next year will be any different?

You were bottom 4 this year, about to send some more older blokes to the farm, topping up with more kids. Good luck.

Goddard left St Kilda to go to Essendon at the end of 2012, in 2012 Essendon were 11th, which isn't bottom 4. One example that agrees with my summation. Thank you.

Reckon this trade would be a win win for the clubs.

But why would stringer want to go to north?

You have to admit it's concerning they haven't been able to land a player over the last couple of years given the reported effort and coin involved

They've had a crack at three players, all in top 4 sides.

Come on mate, in 2012 St Kilda and Essendon both just missed final, Goddard saw the writing on the wall at St Kilda and jumped off as they fell to 5/17 and 16th in 2013 and Essendon finished 7th but got booted for the drugs scandal, little did Goddard know that at the time. Who is to say Essendon weren't bound for bigger things in '13-'14? Certainly Goddard left St Kilda like a rat off a sinking ship for greener pastures. 2014 Dal Santo does the same, jumps off a sinking ship.

Note how none of them jumped ONTO a sinking ship?

Good luck with the free agents, I'm sure one over paid bloke will drag you out the shit.

IMO missing finals at anytime does not give you any right to consider yourself to be in the "premiership window"

Even more stupid was Hutchy on Footy Classified trying to justify it saying it was because the AFL was concerned about some of the one-sided games last weekend.
So first week we would have four teams who are rarely more than average play each other for the possibility of 5 v 10 in the second week? And that doesn't have the potential to be lop-sided?

I liked the proposal put fortward thats a slight variation to this. It was something like top 6 is as is but once the season finishes 7th-10th is decided by performance against the top 6 teams during the season and graded according to winning ratio, then percentage. This does two things, it makes up for the losdided draw and clubs making finals through an easy draw at the bottom end of the eight and getting the best sides in finals.
I think on this basis it had Hawthorn 7th, Collingwood 8th, cant remember who was 9th and 10th. Also would have been a bit of pressure on Port to stay in the top 6 because if they didnt they would have dropped to about 283rd

That's a pretty interesting idea, and agree, like it more than the wildcard idea.

At the end of the day though, it is classic AFL - create a problem where there didn't need to be one and then need to come up with some other idea to fix it. Wouldn't be an issue if there was a less-contrived draw left more to chance and if there was no bye before the finals.

Any chance we can leave our game alone for 1 second???? The top 8 doesn't need changing... You are either good enough to make it or you're not! Stop trying to reward mediocrity
