'Save' our club :?

It will still exist as a club if it moves to the GC

Spare a thought for the old Fitzroy supporters - I bet they would have preferred to get their debts wiped but stay intact like the Roos will

There were too many Melbourne clubs in the AFL from the outset - some have to go - somewhere or somehow.
I feel for your pain, but they can't all be propped up forever.

The best for our club is to move, it gives us a chance to gain new supporters outside of melbourne, if we stay we are competeing against 9 other victorian based teams for supporters. The Gold Coast not only provides a great base for our team but we will aslo get more much needed funding from the AFL and being the only club on the Gold Coast more financial sponsors may jump on board.

Bear this in mind Kangarooted barrackers
When there are games in Sydney do we see South Melbourne on the programme
When we see a game in Brisbane do we see Fitzroy on the programme.
In 10 years time will we see Noth Melbourne/Kangaroos on the programme?

Go to the Gold Coast but lose your identity?

That could be said for any team going around, how many boys are playing for the Cats and aren't from Geelong ?

Geelong is still called Geelong and not West Victoria.

True, but REB's point IMO was saying that there aren't too many blokes FROM Port Adelaide playing for the Power.
Geelong will always be Geelong, as would Essendon & Collingwood, but how many blokes from those teams are from the respective
areas ? Admittedly as pointed out by BB, Geelong would have a higher than average amount.

North Melbourne changed there name to the Kangaroos, and lost the identity right there. Looking on their homepage I couldn't see any reference
about "North Melbourne" except a by line in regard to the board, which referred itself to the North Melbourne Football Club.
Even there website is kangaroos.com
IMO they sold there soul when they changed their name...

Legal Identity - NMFC
Known as - Kangaroos

how is that selling your identity?

As I said Dutchy, IMO.
I understand the legal NMFC bit, but how many kids growing up and future supporters will recognise the North Melbourne bit. To them it'll just be the Kangaroos. Similar to the Brisbane Lions. No Fitzroy mentioned there at all. Should be the Brisbane-Fitzroy Lions, as should be the Sydney-South Melbourne Swans, and the Footscray Western Bulldogs. If the Roos move to the Coast, there goes the NM bit of the name.
A difficult time for the NMFC IMO, one I hope that works out for them and the SUPPORTERS.

The NMFC went from our name 5 years ago, so thats a mute point....any kid growing up that is a serious fan/member will want to learn and know about the clubs history,

Interesting to note that Denis Pagan and possibly Ricky Ponting will be board members if we stay in Melb

I dont think Punter and Pagan can save us from the AFL unless they are going to donate a whole lot of money

That backs up my point nicely. My point was that Port is Port in name only.

adds a fair bit of credibility to the board though when seeking sponsors etc etc

Im feeling confident that whatever the decision it will be successful for us, the shakeup we needed ala Geelong

Marketability, perhaps... Credibility, not so much - neither of them have proven themselves in the business world at this point.

That doesn't mean they won't go well, it just means we don't know how they will go.
