From Fox Sports
WESTERN Bulldogs have lost full-back Brian Harris - but gained full-back Brian Lake, after the club's best-and-fairest legally changed his name following the birth of his first child, Cohen Ashton.
His former surname was his mother's maiden name, and he decided to change from Harris to Lake to continue the family name.

Good on him - a tough decision to change your name later in life when you are over 21 and a male !!!

I don't think he actually changed his name. He just asked to be referred to by his middle name (Max) instead of his first name (Jarrod). I think legally he is still Jarrod Maxwell Rooke.
Lots of people are referred to by their middle name ie. George Bradley Hogg.

I actually think you and Catfish are both right, His middle name was Maxwell and he had a grandfather called Max as well.
I think he has officially changed the name.

From Wikipedia:
In November 2006, Rooke made the decision to officially change his legal name to Max, instead of Jarad. Rooke's middle name at birth was Maxwell and both his grandfathers were known as Max, which led to a fondness of the name as the main reason behind the change. He also sported a new wild 1970's hairstyle and beard. [2] Rooke will be known by the new name in all official AFL records from the 2007 season onwards, in the same vein of teammate Jimmy Bartel's name change from his original "James".

Smart of the Bulldogs in trying to copy the Mighty Cats but I don't know if this will help that much.

The player formerly known as Harris could very well have been our SOO full back this year - had we had a team.

You can legally go by your middle name without changing it anyway.
