Salary Cap Gone!!!.......Hypothetically....

if the salary cap was abolished i wonder how much that would effect the player payments??..............it would be safe to assume they would go up and in some cases enormously......

The afl elite eg Brown, Judd, Abblett etc payments would more than likely double.........could it then be argued that the salary cap limits corporate sponsorship, coz sponors are gonna see more "Bang for there Buck" by investing in a team that has a greater chance of success by attracting better quality players....

it seems afl players are poorly paid conpared to other codes considering the current level of club memberships, attendences and tv rights etc......is it therefore time to get rid of the cap try and attract more sponsors with bigger dollars and hopefully see the game flourish??

your thought??

I believe that suggestion would kill the game rather than help it flourish. You'd end up with an EPL style of competition where you would have 2-3 really strong clubs with all the financial clout who would dominate year in, year out. Okay if you support those teams, but not much fun for other supporters. In terms of competition, AFL is healthy at present with teams not spending a lot of time at the top and other teams coming through.

I agree with AH ... You would probably lose any regulation of club finances also and effectively a club could over invest in personnel without recouping the $$ placing the clubs in need of financial support ... Again, another thing that has happened so so often in British Football/Soccer.

Revise the salary cap by not paying them and let them get real jobs like the footy stars of the past.
While we are being radical pin politicians salaries to average wages.

More than likely end up with a competition that could be won by only a handful of clubs, a la EPL

John Elliot made me laugh when he was on 5AA last year describing the AFL's equalisation policy as "communism" :D

He said he was a "capitalist" and, in his opinion, if a club has better finances it should be able to buy the best players .... survival of the fittest in a perfect market! He quoted the EPL as the way the AFL should go

Even after all the dramas at Carlton he was still sticking to his guns .... if nothing else full credit for believing in what you believe in, not that I agree with him.

I actually agree to some extent with Elliott. The AFL's recruiting rules are all about propping up poorly performing clubs and rewarding mediocrity and dragging back successful clubs. Dont agree with cheating the system, but i certainly agree a different system should be in place.

Manchester United are the top winning club in EPL for the FA cup, yet not by the margin that people might think. EPL still has a relitivley even distribution of winners of the FA cup despite not having a salary cap.

Manchester United 11
Arsenal 10
Tottenham Hotspur 8
Aston Villa 7
Liverpool 7
Blackburn Rovers 6
Newcastle United 6
Everton 5
The Wanderers 5
West Bromwich Albion 5
Bolton Wanderers 4
Manchester City 4
Sheffield United 4
Wolverhampton Wanderers 4
Chelsea 4
Sheffield Wednesday 3
West Ham United 3
Bury 2
Nottingham Forest 2
Old Etonians 2
Preston North End 2
Sunderland 2
Barnsley 1
Blackburn Olympic 1
Blackpool 1
Bradford City 1
Burnley 1
Cardiff City 1
Charlton Athletic 1
Clapham Rovers 1
Coventry City 1
Derby County 1
Huddersfield Town 1
Ipswich Town 1
Leeds United 1
Notts County 1
Old Carthusians 1
Oxford University 1
Portsmouth 1
Royal Engineers 1
Southampton 1
Wimbledon 1

Think you'd need to judge it from the last 15 years winners though mate, thats about the timeframe within which the power of the $ really hit home.

May still support your argument, Im not sure I can't remember all the winners

If we go over the last 15 years, here are the winners,

2007 - Chelsea
2006 - Liverpool
2005 - Arsenal
2004 - Manchester United
2003 - Arsenal
2002 - Arsenal
2001 - Liverpool
2000 - Chelsea
1999 - Manchester United
1998 - Arsenal
1997 - Chelsea
1996 - Manchester United
1995 - Everton
1994 - Manchester United
1993 - Arsenal.

Totals over 15 years being,

Arsenal - 5
Manchester United - 4
Chelsea - 3
Liverpool - 2
Everton 1.

Interesting to note though that the FA cup has been shared in 15 years by only 5 clubs though!

Exactly ... out of how many teams is this 5 as a % (including all the divisions)?

And what are the same stats on whatever you call the winner of first division (EPL ignoramus here  )?

In the last 15 years the AFL has had 9 premiers (out of 16 teams that's over 50% of teams)

Essendon, WC, Carlton, NM, Adel, Bris, PA, Syd, Geelong

I know which comp I'd prefer to follow as a supporter you have clearly better odds of having one of the best days of your life! Or as a sponsor ...

I would have thought that the actual EPL championship, rather than the FA Cup would be the MAJOR prize. This is what is fought for over a number of months. A knock out tournament does have that element of luck.

EPL Winners since 1992 (its inception)
1993 Man Untd
1994 Man Utd
1995 Blackburn
1996 Man Utd
1997 Man Utd
1998 Arsenal
1999 Man Utd
2000 Man Utd
2001 Man Utd
2002 Arsenal
2003 Man Utd
2004 Arsenal
2005 Chelsea
2006 Chelsea
2007 Man Utd
2008 Man Utd or Chelsea

4 clubs in 15 years and every year Man Utd didnt win, they finished second or third
From 1996 there have been only three other clubs finish in the top 3.

This out of a total of 40 clubs that have played in the Premier League in its 15 year existence.

The $$$ have made it a JOKE
