What would be your current 3 big sides SA - VIC - WA

Have a crack at naming each side - you can name first 18 to take the field plus 6 on the bench

Hopin they dont do allies - waste of time of I think

I dont think McLeod would qualify to play for SA. I wouldnt play Burgoyne across half forward, either half back or on the ball. I'd have Bassett (or Johncock) in the 18 before Fisher. Corey Enright would be in my squad, also Schammer, McGregor and Michael Wilson.

You might be right on Mcleod as he is originally from NT if they dont have allies though he would be allowed to play for SA the same as Carey was allowed to in his hey day.

Rik E Boy - shouldnt that say hands off your C%@#. Cant have a bit of fun can you. Did you not ever go to a State of Origin game and see the best players on the park at the same time - awesome. Ottens in a SA jumper would be great for all SA fans and if you ask him I am sure if the timing was right he would love to pull on that jumper.

REB is right. As long as there is a risk of players getting hurt playing for their state (there always is) then there will no longer be State of Origin football. It is disappointing, like BB says, that we can't see this great exponent of our game. Also, crowds in Victoria for the last SoO were shocking. That is where Rugby has it over AFL, the State of Origin is bigger than the GF in their league! Ted Whitten would be rolling in his grave.

Thats why state of origin should be played as a separte comp/ carnival pre-season. That way the best of the best get match practice by representing their state, and the up and comers will get more of a chance to prove themselves in the nab cup. The benefits are two-fold.

It's like the clubs are saying "if you're gonna get hurt, you can do it playing for our club."..whats the bloody difference??

But alas with the growth of the "NATIONAL" competition, where "technically" we see state v state almost each week, in a real world you wouldn't expect to see state of origin back any time soon..shame that...

I've been to many State of Origin games and the reason why they were great at the time was because during the 1980's and early '90's clubs made their best players available. After a while this began to be not the case and in the end State of origin failed because of this and the fact that the majority of Victorian football fans couldn't give a rats ar5e about State football and playing against WA was a snore fest of the highest order. No, State of origin is as dead as a dodo and the sooner you work this one out the better.

State of Origin football is with out a doubt a thing of the past.With a team (or two) based in each of the states that follow Aussie Rules it is surplus to requirements.

The only thing left lingering from those days is the anti Victorian sentiment," Yeah,lets beat Essington,Victorian scum".

Its about time idiots moved on from this attitude and discovered how much joy there is in hating all the other 15 clubs,not just the Victorian based sides.

I dont mind the victorian based clubs.... it's so much more fun hating the PEWR though

Seeing as we all know that State of Origin may never return, do you think (REB, BB, Booney, Fal Ck, anyone else etc) you could name a hypothetical side that would line up for Victoria. I have given mine for SA. You could say that there is no point yada yada but it is an interesting concept and I reckon it would be pretty tough to name one for Victoria...

It would be fargen tough! The way the national draft works today,it is almost impossible to remember where all the players (minus the South Aust born,and even then) have been drafted from.If you give me a list of all the players who would fall under the Victorian banner,I will pick my 22.

I think in this day and age you would almost want to know where the game was going to be played and who is likely to coach, to know which style of play is most likely (as well as basing against the opposition for matchups etc) ... Almost like the International Rules series where Sheedy studied the game and decided that speed, speed and more speed was going to be his plan and assembled his squad accordingly ...

I think State of origin is finished as well, as sad as that is.

What i would prefer to see if zones brought in so that someone born/residing in a particular state has the opportunity to play for a club in that state by being assigned to a zone in that state. The reality of the situation though is that it aint gonna happen, not with the mentality of the current AFL administration (socialism!!), who couldnt care less about young players having to leave their home states, all they care about is the eveness of the competition and especially making sure that the northern clubs (Bris/Sydney) are competitive. In an ideal world it would be great to have 3 clubs in SA, Port, the Crows and the "Norwood Doubles Blues", all being assigned a part of the state to recruit players from. If the players didnt want to play for that club then they could put themself up for a trade to play for a rival club. Under my plan there could be 3 clubs from SA and WA, thereby allowing for a reduction in Vic teams, and if necessary an additional club in NSW and or Qld could mean even less clubs in Vic. Victoria could then be split into zones as well, and if the AFL so desired it could apportion part of Vic for clubs in Northern states to recruit, given that they wouldnt be competitive if left to recruit solely from their own state.

In time, it would then mean that 85% to 90% of any given club would have home grown players, youngsters wouldnt have to leave their home state, and supporters would be able to more closely identify with their club.

To me it would make much more sense for Jonathan Brown to be playing for Geelong, Riewolt at the Lions and Schammer, Cooney, Pavlich, and Griffin playing for either Port or the Crows.

Yes State of Origin is dead and that gets up my gate plenty - I guess you enjoy the International rules then. But a one off at the right time would be fantastic. The AFL has a couple of years to sort it out so I emplore them to do it.


As you go on I see more and more that you are very narrowed minded and the only thing you can see is that no one outside of your world can have an opinion. Your opinion of football and its values are far different to mine and I am thankful for that.
