Just a thought

I know it's still early days but Im wondering if Fergus is re-thinking his decsion...

His first game for the Saints he acumulated approx 3 kicks, then found himself dropped

Now the Crows, in the short term are down a tall forward and a CHB, he would of got his opportunity....... or maybe in the wash up this trade wont hurt the crows

Well at the moment i dont think he would get a regular game, which i think was the issue, i know the crows were looking at him though and had high hopes for him in there forward line. But like you said the crows are a key forward down at the moment. But when Welsh and Hentschel come back i would think Watts wouldnt have fitted into that team. But how long does Welsh stay fit for??? cant say. If watts was a bit more patient he would get a good run at the cows.....eventually (probably when they Welsh just cant stay fit anymore), but at st.Kilda, its hard to say again, as they have plenty of talls that can play down back and up front, and of course Kosi is going to be back soon. All in all way too early to tell if this was a good decision or not.

He wanted to be back in Melbourne where he grew up, i think it pretty much comes down to that. I'm sure he'd be at St Kilda for the long haul.

Stan, good post but I think the Saints are a bit thin down back especially with the retirement of Penny, so it would be a worry for Fergus that he is unbable to at least get a run as a tall defender, I know he played at CHB for the Eagles for at least half a season

I said last year on FootySA that Watts was a dud and nothing's changed my mind since. Still, he's got plenty of time to add to the list of REB's bad calls.

I wish the "dud" had been dropped from the Eagles side in last year's finals, as North would have found themselves playing in a GF if he had.

I agree, fast defenders that can spoil every contest when a forward makes a lead is a very rare thing in the SANFL but they're a dime a dozen in the AFL.

With Hamill,Reiwoldt,Koschitzke,Milne and co on the 'Ainters list,surely young Fergie didnt feel this was the best place for him to get a regular game?

The lad has shown real immaturity in this decision,not having the forsight to see Adelaide are a better chance of winning a flag under Craigy than the 'Ainters are ever going to be under Grant Dumbass.

Got post boon, straight to the point. But i think with Hamil and Gehrig that they dont have much time left in the AFL. So i think he will definitly be looked at soonish.

Syd-dog good points there but down back i think that they are ok, with McGuire, Hudgton and schwarze when hes in the side can also play down back. Also add Fisher who I think is a great player with plenty of ability. So i dont think he would be worried at the moment.

But one this is sure, the cows have a much better chance of winning a flag mainly due to the fact that they are not handy-capped by there coach.

The first and only time I had thought maybe he can play was that day against The roosters in the 2 years he was in SA.

I rate Fisher and can see why the Crows were keen on him and why the saints did not want to let him go

My point is Max and Schwarze should ideally pick up the third and fouth forwards, Im not sure if these guys have the body size to go week in week out at the opposition #1 and #2 forwards......

With Watts down back, you allow Fergus and Macguire to pick up the two key talls, then Max and fisher play of flanks, similar to what the Crows have done with the hound-dog and bassett had a great year last year and the move has probably extended his afl shelf life

You are right there syd, i was just thinking that up forward he would have more of a shot, as Gehrig and Hamil are getting long in the tooth. He could definitly play down back as a key defender. But at this stage I think st.kilda are looking at him as a forward.

Also just on a side note from the game last night, was anybody standing Lenny Hayes?

sometimes best way to develop a forward is to start his career in defence, the G-Train and Bradshaw are good examples

St Kilda's key acquisition for 2006, key forward Fergus Watts, may miss the rest of 2006 after suffering a broken leg in the VFL on Sunday.

Watts, the son of club chief executive Jim Watts, was picked up by the Saints in the off-season from Adelaide in exchange for the club's first round draft selection, No.17 overall.

But he suffered a fractured fibula while playing for the Casey Scorpions against Port Melbourne on Sunday and underwent surgery on Monday.

Watts had five touches for the Saints in the season-opener against West Coast, but spent the last two weeks back in the VFL. The 20-year-old played five matches in two seasons for the Crows, before heading back to Victoria to play for the Saints.

His absence leaves the Saints a bit exposed in the key forward department, although Justin Koschitzke is expected to return to the side this week to bolster the club's big man stocks.
