Hype Round

Yep, Rivalry round it is..silly me, I thought EVERY round was rivalry round but heck what would I know. Are these teams really rivals??

Melbourne v Geelong: I would have thought our main rivals in recent seasons were the Saints. What club would really consider Melbourne a rival but they've got to play someone this week.

Sydney v Brisbane: Ho ho. Maybe in Rugby league but Sydney might fast be building up a rivalry with West Coast and Brisbane seems to have more of a rivalry with Essendon and Collingwood.

Adelaide v Port and West Coas v Freo: Logical enough but lately Freo haven't got on all that well with the Saints. Three games in a row now between these sides have finished in controversial fashion.

Essendon v Richmond: Dreamtime?? Not much imagination used in this marketing gimmick, Red, Yellow, Black, Indigenous..a bit of a stretch really.

St Kilda v Bulldogs: St Kilda, see Geelong and lately Freo. Bulldogs I reckon North Melbourne as they have both punched on in the handout line ha ha.

Collingwood v Carlton: Age old rivals but a real yawn of a fixture for nearly a decade now. Staler than a stubbie full of butts on the morning after.

Kangaroos v Hawks: Originally programmed due to the 70's rivalry they had but has increased significance due to the Roos snaffling of ex Hawks in recent years. This game will go off and will be the highlight of 'Rivalry Round' for me. Looking forward to this one.

regards,

REB

Another contrived marketing ploy by the Bigboys, much like heritage round, and for mine just as pointless.I think most teams have 15 rivals,as we are all striving for the same goal and each and every one of the other 15 teams are in our way and have the potential to stop us.

(All striving bar Richmond, who could hate them?)

I'm not actually a big fan of Richmond, main reason being that when Port joined the league Richmond wanted to do everything they could to make it difficult for Port to succeed (refusing to allow fair recruting rules/concessions etc). Despite this Port has succeeded in their time in the league whilst those pathetic Tigers have had (early) draft pick after draft pick, but to no avail. Only time will actually tell whether or not they ever have any success. Maybe in about 2012 when Deledio, Tambling etc reach their prime.

As for the Richmond/Essendon "rivalry" i'd say the reasoning behind this would be the "Sheedy" connection.
