Guess Port's nine AFL quality players

Postby Magpiespower » Tue May 16, 2006 8:58 am

According to Chocko, we've only got nine players up to AFL standard.

I'll nominate Shaun Burgoyne as one...

No MP,he said we have " 9 good quality AFL standard players".I know this makes little difference, but he did say "good quality",and then said we have 5 or 6 who are finding their feet and several who are up and down and inconsistent.

Tough to disagree with those comments.

The quality are:
Tredrea
C.Cornes
K.Cornes
S.Burgoyne
P.Burgoyne
Wakelin
Lade/Brogan
Cassisi
Wilson

"Finding their feet":
Pearce
Salopek
White
Surjan
Pettigrew
Chaplin
Thompson

The dissapointing:
THURSTANS
Ebert
Dew
Thurstans
Motlop

Any more to add to the lists boys?

Up until the beginning of last year if there was a Port player I wanted on the Crows list it was Wilson. Hell he goes hard at it and is a very honest player. He was shot after the 2004 grannie with his shoulders.

Michael Wilson I dips me lid to you mate, you can be very proud of what you have done with your footy career. I admire your passion for your footy club. If the all the Port players bled for the Smears like you did the Smears would be permanent finalists.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Those people can be deported with the wanker who had the "Choco for Baghdad" sheet.

As you know Borat, every team has fickle fans.(See Brett Burton and Ian Parrie at Cowland)

Come on Fashion chick! Tredders is coming back from his 900th dislocated kneecap. He's a big guy so if this keeps happening to him his recovery and return to confidence and form will take longer each time, you're a trainer so you know this is the case. At full fitness Tredrea is one of the premier CHF's in the comp, but is not in top nick now obviously.

My giggle was at *pfft* Cassisi!! Strewth. Tough times at Alberton for the second SA composite team!!

regards,

Point taken REB, however, Is playing a Tredders at 60 or 70% fitness good for the team? Doesnt seem to be helping alot at the moment. Give him a magpies jumper until he gets some form/strength/confidence back

Always thought Dom was an average player but he is performing well below that at the moment.

Hate to say it but I think all those kamikaze years might be catching up with Wilbur.

I know he's coming back from injury and all but even last year, he was that extra step slower.

Think he might be of greater value if used off the bench in bursts, similar to how Chocko used Hardwick in the premiership year.

Without me being rude Falcon Chick,it is a humble opinion that does not hold Warren Tredrea in the quality list.

Ok then, let me word it differently then..... is Tredders a quality player in general......YES.

Is he a quality player at the minute.......NO, this is why ( IMHO ) i'm not rating him PRESENTLY, because PRESENTLY he is not perfoming up to his normally very high standard. Tell me you dont disagree, D Boon???

I agree Falcon,he,at the moment is struggling. He is also with out a doubt a top quality footballer,as evidenced by his All-australian selection,at what most believe to be the hardest spot on the ground to play, two years in a row.

My question to you is,with the current supply(or lack there of) the Power forwards are currently receiving, who would not be struggling up there? In fact, name me a Power forward who is playing well?

Can't fault those lists Daniel-sahn ... Would be interested in your thoughts of where Walsh, Lonie and Mahoney are at?

As for Cassissi I think he has shown he is quality at AFL level, I think he is perhaps a little more limited in his impact-ability than the others in that list and that tends to mislead many in their views on him.

The other problem for Port other than the glaringly obvious depth issue at present, is that, of that quality list Tredrea (maybe), Wilson (maybe), Wakelin (certainly), Lade (probably) have perhaps less than 5 years left due to age/injury ... Throw in a guy like Bishop who whilst never someone bordering on All-Australian status, has played a significant role at times in the last 5+ years and it shows that the rebuilding phase will take several seasons longer than usual unless some tough decisions are made over the next year or two.

I guess another hinderance Port may have had to face in recent times is their financial position and the effects any payouts of terminated contracts (aswell as affecting the Salary Cap) may have had??

Walsh has been a solid addition to our list, walked in and has played a significant role so far this season.Good contributor.

Mahoney plays well when we play well,in no way am I rubbishing him,I just think he struggles a bit when we struggle, but is one of those players who tries his guts out every week,we need more like him.(Desire wise)

Lonie, well, what do I say about Lonie.Let me think.....

Bishop,is solid in one-on-one encounters, but I,and many Port fans would hold their breathe when he runs off and backs himself.Under enourmous pressure do to our forwards and centre line not chasing and coughing the ball up like they do.

Lonie,Lonie,hmmm.......Mum always says," If you dont have anything nice to say, dont say anything at all......."

So where to from here then for the Power brainstrust .. Do they remove EVERY player at seasons end that they can't envisage being in a premiership team in say 4+ years time whether it be due to age, injury or ability ... How heavy-handed would Port fans on here be with the Axe??

i choose Damon White and Brendon Lade (when playing forward). Lade has been a standout in what has otherwise looked like a very ordinary team all year.

So the Power have no depth.... or are those kids rising in the ranks not being able to play to their full potential because every week the team hopes that the great tredders will finally come good? Too much reliance on the unfit/ out of form captain i say...

What does every one think of puttin Chad Cornes back to CHB.

If it aint broke dont fix it - is what I always say - and well at the moment it is well broken.

Put your best players in their best positions - maybe the solution.
It is what it is !!!

I think the adage is right mate, but problem is they have several area's that are broke and only one Chad Cornes ... Most statistics these days support the notion that the midfield is the most critical area and your best players should be playing there ...
