AFL announces fixture for week two of finals

THE AFL has scheduled two blockbusters for the MCG in the second week of the 2009 Toyota AFL Finals series.

Friday night will pit the loser of the second qualifying final (Geelong v Western Bulldogs) and the winner of the second elimination final (Brisbane Lions v Carlton).

This will be the second semi-final and it will be played at the MCG, starting at 7.45pm on Friday, September 11.

The first semi-final between the loser of St Kilda v Collingwood and the winner of Adelaide v Essendon will also be at the MCG on Saturday night, September 12, beginning at 7.30pm.

Absolute f...g disgrace how SK have been treated
To win 20 games
The minor premier gets rewarded by playing a side[CO] who finished 4th on thier f...g home ground today
AND
IF
IF
If SK were beaten by CO today
THEN
Would have had to play AC with 2 days less rest

AC V ES should have been played today
SK V CO should have been played Friday night or Saturday night

FWIW
The dream draws that CO have had in minor rounds and finals of late is finished
CO who finshed 4th now get the 2 day less break and play AC this week

Extemely poor programming by the AFL

And once again AC get a dream ride in finals as they did a couple of times in the 90's

It's shocking programming by the AFL, but completely in line with their 'end justifying the means' philosophy. The 'end' being the almighty dollar.

So Adelaide have 2 days more rest than Collingwood. Cry me a river my friend. When you play 18 out of 22 games at the G and hardly leave the state regardless of the rest they have, there are no reasons why Collingwood should not be able to get up for the game against Adelaide at the MCG where they play the majority of there games.
So in closing, S*** happens.

Yes, I had a whinge about this in the Finals Week 1 Thread earlier in the week.

The two night games should have been switched. Granted, Adelaide would have still had the extra day, but the advantage would be far less. Or as Mal suggested, play today's game last night, Brissy game on the Fri and the Crows today.

Anyway, given that we got through to the Prelim i'm not nearly as peeved about it, but it's still an injustice.

Regardless of minor round programming, 8 days rest vs 6 days rest after a first final is a big immediate discrepancy.

Agree CO usually get the giftations
Whats your answer if SK were beaten today ?

PS now I know why the WB coach was so happy round 22 when the final siren went

The fixture for the first week of finals depends on where and when the 8 teams play. It would be stupid for example have a team play in Perth on a Sunday in R22 and then have them play on Friday night in Melbourne. They have to consider everything.

I hope all those Crows fans that whinge and whine all year every year about Collingwoods dream draw acknowledge that they have been handed a gift this week with a 2 day extra break coming in, I also reckon Collingwood would rather have this game at AAMI, where their record is superb.

Mal - If the Saints/Collingwood game was on Friday night Saints would have had a 5 day break - cant do that

I don't think the MCG is a true home ground for anyone these days. Not in terms of the old days of Victoria Park and Moorabin. All the Melbourne teams have their training facilities elsewhere.

It's more of a disadvantage for St Kilda if they missed another opportunity to play on the ground where the GF is played.

On the issue of the final being played today, they couldn't play it earlier because they had to have 7 days rest after round 22. Both played last Sunday.

Other than the home final against Geelong in 97 what are you referring to? In 98 they played in Perth in the last round then travelled to Melbourne, Sydney, Melbourne and back again to Melbourne in the GF to win. Yeah what a dream ride

FFS, they had a chance to go straight to a prelim. with 2 weeks off but they weren't good enough, just as they weren't good enough the previous week. Adelaide because of travel effectively have a 7 day break not 8. get over it.
Zorro, I reckon Adel had a home final moved to the G in the early 2000's because of the "MCG" clause.

1993
AC minor round finished 5th in a top 6
ELIM FINAL
HW 13-17 AC 16-14
SEMI FINAL
CA 13-8 AC 8-20

AC finish 5th, get beaten in a semi final, then get gifted a Prelim Final
How may sides that dont finish top 4 get a second chance ???????????????????????

1997
AC minor round 4th in a top 8
AC 14-15 WC 9-12
AC 11-10 GE 9-14
people still talk about the free kick Colbert didnt get late in the game to put GE in front ?
AC 12-21 WB 13-13 PRELIM FINAL
Liberatore kicks a goal to put WB too far in front of AC in the last qtr
Libber jumps for joy
The goal ump signals a point

Very fortunate with the umpiring in 2 finals games

1998
AC finish 5th in the minor round in a top 8
QUALIFYING FINAL
ML 17-13 AC 9-13
say no more
how does a side that finishes 5th lose thier first final by 48 points+ get gifted a second chance.
Becoz back then the highest ranked of 5-6-7-8th teams if they all lost got a 2nd chance
The 6-7-8th teams all lost that first week of finals
How many sides that dont make the top4 get a 2nd chance ??????????????????????????????

Being a 2nd tier AC supporter I can appreciate that lady fortune has been on Adelaide Crows sides in finals

2009
CO finish 4th
AC finish 5th
CO have 2 less days to prepare for the next final

Again luck paves a way for AC in finals

I think the break CW would've had between R22 and their final had alot to do with the timing of the game.

Unless you are going to talk about Norwood, the year 1997 does not exist. :(

Why did you have to bring that up??? I had only just finally got over that. That made me physically ill when that mark wasn't paid.

For those non members, buy your tickets thru the ticketek website and key in GOCROWS in the barcode section, you will get the tickets and you can print them off, no need to show or quote any membership numbers, just did it for my parents who are up bush and couldnt buy tickets today...

Dont need to wait until they go on public sale
