Players ignored in the draft

Postby Blue Boy » Tue May 30, 2006 6:09 pm

Was thinking about players originally overlooked in the draft.

These players are usually put on the rookie list and then elevated.

Who does every one rekon will turn out to be pretty good or if not already are.

I rekon that Davey-Melbourne and Rutten-Adelaide have well and truly made it. Pearce-Port will also be a very good player.
It is what it is !!!

Skipworth was originally drafted - then delisted - then given another chance as a rookie - then upgraded again.
Dont rate him sorry mate !!!

Not sure whether he'd applied for the draft before previously, but Ben Hudson wasn't taken until he was about 24 for memory

aware that skippy was initially on the senior list

I agree skippy still has a fair way to go but I have got a feeling that he is going to be a bit of a lte bloomer, I don't know why I get that feel, I think he has got a pretty good footy brain, he might be ok

Blue Boy, I think that you raise a good point and it builds on a view that I have been expressing on other threads.

That is draft picks arn't the be all and end all of building a good team. This is an excuse which is being used to explained successful teams that have fallen from grace.

I can see no overwhelming evidence that players picked as draft picks 1-10 perform any better in the long run that picks 11-20 or 31-40 for that matter and as you point out there are some pretty useful players who get missed altogether by the draft.
We used to be good :-(

Good Point - but I always thought zoomer could play.

Skipworth made his debut in 2001 - I think some players have moved ahead of him though on the pecking order - I rekon if Douglas was fit he may of got a game last week in front of him - time will tell !!!

I agree, their is definitely a challenge their for skippy, players like Rielley, Douglas, Van Berlo and Knights are all probably in front of him at this stage.......

I just feel the first half of last year he started to show some signs but played the majority of his games of the bench, by all reports he had an outstanding pre-season but since has been slowed down by some niggling injuries..........

He has now served his apprenticeship, the challenge for skippy is to now become a regular quality AFL player

Dont forget Bode - Vince - Porplyzia have moved ahead of him as small forward / swapping on the ball - Doughty has really established him self as well !!!

I've long been a fan of Porplyzia and nothing I've seen from him in a Crows guersney this year has swayed my opinion, just has that special touch of class and could develop into an excellent goal sneak imho (similar thoughts on Vince, but I think Porplyzia is physically ahead of him at this stage)

Totally agree, no doubt Vince, Bode and Proplyzia are in front in regards to small forward option.......

But this is what we want, pressure for spots, hopefully this pressure builds consistent performances

You racked them up quickly BB!!
Depth at the crows is great at the moment, at times it feels like the crows lack depth in tall options but then two first pick big guys from last year are still missing in bock and hudson!!

and Ben Hart .. Edwards and Burton have also missed matches, their depth is exceptional, I can't think of too many clubs who could replace personnel as influential to their side aswell as the Cows have ..
