Wangas to announce his retirement from all footy today
Champion player, great bloke, fantastic role model, it's a shame he was not able to play in a farewell match so his supporters could say farewell to an absolute champion of the game

As they say in the classics,a monument to the game is our Gav.
300 AFL games,27 SANFL,2 AFL premierships,1 SANFL premiership,1 Brownlow.
As REB said, done everything possible in Australian Rules football.A sad way to end a magnificent career, probably the only time in his career that injury has had an impact on his season.
Well done Gavin, good luck for what ever the future holds for you, lets hope he can unearth a few more champs out at Mallee Park for the Power to pick up.

Surely you are not denying that Gavin dived for free kicks?

Did the umpire pay a free? If so,it was a free kick, theatrics or not.Dive is a word you would use in a negative sense,I would suggest you are struggling to find something negative about Wanganeen.

A champion footballer. Was great to watch the boy wonder grow up into one of the AFLs greatest players of the current era. 6 All Australians, a Brownlow, almost another one and his 12 minutes of mayhem in the 2004 Grand Final sealed that premiership.
Gonna miss the champion.

I have two grea memories of G wanganeen
My Brother was in Darwin in 1993 and went to Fannie Bay and said to me Wanganeen is 16s to win the Brownlow with Bryan Clarke, I said I'll have some of that!! As a student I could afford $5 each way!!!
However the next day Ess played WC (the famous jumper waving game) and GW was BOG, by the time my brother got the bet on he was in to 8s
Come Brownlow night I was $56 better off.....
My other memory is that game against Geelong earlier that year where he has taken two hangers and including one where he backed into the pack. He was his own mini highlights real that game.
When he came back to the Smears I couldn't respect him as much, I reckon his peak was when he was at Essendon as his early years at Port he had to carry the side where as at Essendon he had Thompson, Hird, O'Donnell, Chris Daniher, Mercuri, Misiti Olarenshaw etc to share the load...

You know, it would have been great for Port Adelaide in the SANFL if he had of played one more match for them at least after this retirement decision, to say thanks and finish off where he began. If he played at Alberton there would have been a big crowd, would have been good for the SANFL as well.

Would have had to play in a wheelchair.

He's been one of the greats of the modern era.
You got the feeling listening to Sheedy that to him it was almost like losing a son to see Wanganeen retire.
Shows how highly he was rated at Essendon that he was given a birth in their team of the century despite only being there for six seasons.

Would be great for Port's opponent too!
Surely they could do a "Scruff Hanna" with him: let him sit on the bench for three quarters, then prop him up in a forward pocket when the result is beyond doubt and give him a soft free in front of goal.
