Postby Strawb » Tue Dec 15, 2009 8:16 pm

I know this is on the AFL thread but I recently got into a discussion on this because i rated Barrie Robran higher than Wayne Carey and Royce Hart.

How many users of this site actually saw all 3 players play? I would say quite a smaller percentage.

I only saw Carey (and a small bit of footage of Hart and even a smaller amount of footage of Robran) and he lifted the Roos to 2 premierships. He was a champion player, but i don't really feel as though i can give a definite answer not having seen the other 2.

I saw all three - Wayne Carey stands out as CHF for consistency and impact, and virtually carrying his club.
[it was a pity nobody could keep Jonathon Ross sober long enough to reach his potential.]
EPIGENETICS - Lamarck was right!

Big Barry. Many years ago, about 13 in fact I was unemployed and a job agency was running a program to help people get into job placements. I went to this 1 week course and Barry Standfield was the facilitator. At that point he was floundering in the SANFL trying to crack the Crows team. As a Port boy I ripped into him for the best part of that week and he confronted me at the end of the week, less than impressed with my constant barbs at him. Big fellow he was too, just had the heart of a budgie, thats all.

Can still recall him holding up the ball to the opposition (his ex Bulldogs teammates) in the goal square with no-one within 50 metres of him before slamming it through the big sticks. I loved it, but obviously Blighty didn't.

No one counts at Collingwood. At least not past 10 and that's only if they have all ten digits.

I saw all three play.

Robran by a street. Easily the best footballer I have seen or ever likely to see.

Could do things that no mere mortal could do. When he played North Adelaide were Champions of Australia once and almost twice, when he got injured North plummeted to bottom of the SANFL.

Talk of the rest and then talk of the best.

Even non North Adelaide people such as Murray Weidemann and Neil Kerley who have seen a lot more football than most people here rate Robran miles better than anyone else.

Furthermore he was an even better centre man than a Centre Half Forward.

He must have been rather special to be accepted as a legend of the AFL having not played VFL or AFL
